Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Inning Heroics Earn Baseball Split With OWU

Bryce Aldridge ripped a two-out single to right center in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in two runs to complete a come-from-behind win for the Wabash baseball team in a 10-8 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. The visiting Battling Bishops won the opening game of the doubleheader 8-5 to earn a split in the North Coast Athletic Conference series between the two teams.

Wabash (19-9, 6-4 NCAC) trailed 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Sean Roginski doubled to left field and came home two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Aldridge to cut the Ohio Wesleyan (11-14, 5-5 NCAC) lead to one run.

Brandon Nelson drew a one-out walk, then advanced to second on a balk. Pinch hitter Matthew Annee smacked a double to left center to score Nelson with the game-tying run. Jared Wolfe followed with a walk. Nick Chao entered the game to pinch run for Annee. Chao and Wolfe stole second and third, but a quick play by OWU shortstop Carter Franklin handled a sharp grounder with the infield drawn in to try and cut the go-ahead run down at the plate. Franklin's play caught Chao midway between third and home and he was retired for the second out of the inning. Jackson Blevins drew a walk to load the bases for Aldridge.

The senior catcher drilled an 0-1 pitch to right center, bringing Wolfe and Roginski home to give the Little Giants a two-run lead. Reliever Zach Moffett allowed two Bishops to reach base on a single and a hit batsmen in the top of the ninth inning before closing out the game with a comeback grounder to the mound and a soft toss to first to earn his second win of the season.

Moffett pitched two innings of relief, limiting Ohio Wesleyan to two hits and one walk to go with one strikeout. Kurt Lange started the game, pitching two innings of seven-hit baseball. He surrendered five runs and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Ryan Thomas pitched three innings, giving up five hits and three runs. Tyler Cooper held the Bishops without a hit over two innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Roginski finished 3-for-4 at the plate in the Wabash victory. Aldridge drove in three runs for the Little Giants. Andrew Jumonville picked up a pair of hits.

Wabash was held to seven hits and stranded 13 runners on base in game one against OWU. The Little Giant defense committed five errors in the 8-5 loss. Aldridge and Wolfe each picked up two hits in the opening contest with Aldridge finishing with two RBI.

Ohio Wesleyan held a 7-1 lead before Wabash closed to within a run after posting a four-run eighth inning to cut the lead to two runs. The Bishops added an insurance run in the ninth to claim the win.

Sean Smith took the loss in the start for the Little Giants. He pitched 5-1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three runs. Eric Murphy, Erich Lange, Billy Johnson, and Kevin O'Donnell each worked in relief for the Little Giants.

Wabash travels to Oberlin Saturday for an NCAC doubleheader before playing a single game Sunday at Manchester to close out the weekend road trip.
