Little Giants Match Baseball Season Wins Mark With 25th Victory

The Wabash baseball team tied the school record for single-season victories by picking up its 25th win of the year with a doubleheader sweep over Hiram College Saturday in games played at The College of Wooster. The Little Giants cruised to a 25-6 victory in game one, followed by a 10-6 win in the second contest.

Wabash (25-9, 10-4 NCAC) equaled the win totals earned in back-to-back seasons in 1997 (25-15) and 1998 (25-9). Saturday's games were moved from Hiram to Wooster after Friday storms damaged the Terriers' home field.

Wabash tallied six runs in the third inning and ten more in the fourth to put the game out of reach early. Jackson Blevins led the team with three hits, including one of four doubles by the Little Giants, along with a team-high five RBI. Joey Martoccio, Sean Roginski, Bryce Aldridge, Joe House, and Tyler Downing each finished the game with two hits. Jared Wolfe, Aldridge, and Roginski each hit triples in the game to tie the school mark for three-base hits in a game.

Kase Lawson earned the victory in relief of Bryan Roberts. Lawson pitched six innings, limiting the Terriers (4-24, 1-12 NCAC) to three earned runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out six. Roberts worked three innings in the start, giving up one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Erich Lange faced three batters, surrendering two hits and one walk. He was charged with two earned runs allowed.

Wabash trailed 1-0 after one inning of play in game two before tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Eric Chavez in the second inning to make the score 1-1. The Little Giants jumped in front with a three-run third inning. Blevins drilled a two-run homer to right field. Matthew Annee added an RBI single to put Wabash in front 4-1.

Aldridge smashed a two-run single in the seventh to push the Wabash lead to 6-2. Wolfe drove in another run in the eighth inning with a single. Aldridge add an RBI double in the ninth inning, followed by a run-scoring triple from Andrew Jumonville to finalize the scoring.

Anee paced the offense with three hits. Aldridge drove in a team-high three runs.

Sean Smith earned the victory with six innings of work as the Wabash starter. He limited Hiram to one earned run on six hits and two walks with one strikeout. Tyler Cooper earned his first save of the season, pitching the final three innings while allowing only two hits and striking out three batters.
