Inclement weather and darkness brought an early end to Tuesday evening's home lacrosse game between Wabash College and DePauw University. The host Little Giants were unable to overcome an early six-goal lead for the visiting Tigers, losing 14-4 when the game was called after three periods.
Â
Wabash (2-8, 0-3 NCAC) fell behind 3-0 in the first period and eventually trailed DePauw (4-8, 1-2 NCAC) 6-0 before
Collin Brennan scored with five minutes remaining in the first half. Brennan's goal sparked two more for the Little Giants from
Steven Stark and
Tucker Dixon. Stark added a second goal midway through the third period, but the Tigers had taken control.
Â
Lightning and a tornado warning forced a delay with 15 seconds remaining in the third period. The teams and fans cleared the Mud Hollow Stadium complex to wait out the weather. By the time the final 15 seconds ran off the clock it was determined to be too dark to continue play, giving DePauw the 14-4 victory.
Â
Wabash struggled at the faceoff dot, with the Little Giants winning just six of their 21 tries. Wabash matched the Tigers in shots over the final two periods after being outshot 14-9 in the opening 15 minutes. The final total fell in DePauw's favor 36-30. The Little Giants put 15 shots on goal compared to 22 for DePauw. Brennan led the way for Wabash with five shots on goal.
Â
Max Atkins finished the game with eight saves.
Adrian Tejeda forced a team-high three turnovers.
Chase Cochran picked up a team-best four ground balls for Wabash.
Â
The Little Giants travel to Hiram College Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
