The Wabash College and College of Wooster baseball teams will meet for the third consecutive time when the two squads clash in the second game of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Thursday, May 17 at 1:15 p.m. at Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College in Michigan.
Adrian will serve as the host institution for the 2018 Mideast Regional. Marietta, Shenandoah, La Roche, Ithaca, Otterbein, and Adrian make up the remainder of the eight-team regional pool. Tickets are $8 per day for adults for a full session of games for that day. Students with a college ID and seniors will be admitted at $5 per day.
Wabash (28-15) and Wooster (36-8) met four times previously this season. The Scots won two games at Wabash during the regular season by scores of 9-4 and 9-1. The two squads met on the second day of the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament last Friday with Wabash claiming a 7-3 victory to send the Little Giants into Saturday's championship game. Wooster defeated Denison University 4-2 Friday evening to earn the other spot in the championship game. Wabash jumped out to an early lead in the title contest to eventually capture its second NCAC Baseball Tournament title by a score of 17-8.
The victory provided Wabash an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Wooster received one of 16 Pool C bids from the national tournament selection committee.
The double-elimination tournament begins Thursday, May 17 with Marietta playing Shenandoah at 10 a.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the game between Wabash and Wooster on Friday, May 18 at 4:30 p.m. with the losers scheduled to meet Friday at 10 a.m. The tournament runs through Sunday, May 20 unless and "if" game is needed to determine a regional champion. That game would be played Monday, May 21. The regional champion advances to the pool-play double elimination championship tournament to begin May 25 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Wabash earned an NCAA Tournament bid for the second time in school history by winning the NCAC Tournament. The Little Giants won the conference tournament in 2011 and played in the South Regional in Memphis, Tennessee. The Little Giants lost to Shenandoah 4-0 in the opening round of the regional before defeating Christopher Newport 9-3. Wabash was eliminated from regional play with a 7-5 loss to Salisbury.
