Overtime Goal Lifts Wabash Soccer To 2-1 Win Over Anderson

A goal off the foot of David Riggs in the 109th minute provide the Wabash soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory over Anderson University Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Cristian Aleman delivered a ball into the box from midfield that Riggs collected on the left side of the goal and deposited in the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Wabash (6-1-1) forced overtime by rallying from a 1-0 deficit. Anderson (3-4-1) scored in the 16th minute of the match on a goal from Wes Erny off a rebounded shot attempt from Race Williams. The Little Giants were held scoreless despite outshooting Anderson 20-8 in regulation with five shots on goal compared to only two for the visiting Ravens.

Jacques Boulais evened the match with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Kyle Holmer took a goal kick from Anderson and turned it right back toward the Ravens' goal where he found Boulais. Boulais worked toward the middle at the top of the box and drilled a shot into the upper-left corner to tie the match at 1-1.

Wabash controlled both overtime periods with its overall team depth. Nine bench players saw action for the Little Giants and produced nine of Wabash's 27 shots in the contest, including three of nine shots on goal.  Wabash outshot Anderson 7-0 in the overtime. The Ravens managed only one shot attempt in the final period of regulation, as well.

Chad Wunderlich recorded one save in the winning effort as the Little Giants' goalkeeper.  He improved to 6-1-1 on the season.

"I was proud of the fight our guys showed today," Wabash head coach Chris Keller said. "We started slow and gave up a soft goal, but came back in the second half and really took it to Anderson. I was glad we could use a lot of players off the bench today, particularly after a tough match against Hanover on Sunday. We got great outings today by Riggs, Holmer, and Nathan Ooley."

Wabash, ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region men's poll released earlier this afternoon, concludes its three-game home stand Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Hiram College in the opening contest in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
