Twenty-Seven Point Scoring Run Leads Wabash To Homecoming Win Over Wooster

A 27-0 scoring run over the course of two quarters of play lifted the Wabash football team to a 48-20 victory Saturday after over the College of Wooster as part of the Little Giants' annual Homecoming celebration.
 
Wabash (4-0, 3-0 NCAC) held a 14-13 lead after the visiting Fighting Scots (2-3, 1-3 NCAC) cut the Little Giants' lead to 14-13 with a 30-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Mateo Renteria to Nick Stausbaugh. Wabash answered with an eight-play, 63-yard scoring drive that included an amazing sideline catch by Ryan Thomas for a 21-yard reception on a second-and-five play. Austin Hoover capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run for one of his three rushing touchdowns in the game to boost the Little Giants' lead to 21-13.
 
Wabash recorded the only takeaway of the game on the very next drive. Jake Page intercepted a Renteria pass to put the ball back in the hands of the Little Giant offense. Wabash march down the field, eventually scoring on a 10-yard TD pass from Jake Reid to Oliver Page for a 28-13 lead at the half.
 
The Little Giants opened the third quarter with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:47 to end in another one-yard TD run for Hoover to move the score to 34-13. The Wabash defense held Wooster to a three-play drive before punting on its next possession. The Little Giant offense responded with another long drive, this time moving the football 60 yards in 11 plays with Isaac Avant scoring on a five-yard run to take another 6:28 off the clock while extended the lead to 41-13. Wabash kept the ball on the drive with a fake field goal on fourth down. Kicker Alex Marr took the direct snap and raced 20 yards to the Wooster six-yard line for a first down, with Avant finding the end zone two plays later.
 
Wooster rallied for a score on the opening drive of the fourth quarter to trim the advantage to 41-20. Wabash added the final touchdown of the game with a 22-yard run by freshman Mason Durrett to provide the final 28-point differential.
 
Wabash rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns in the game two weeks after running for six scores at Kenyon. Avant led the Little Giants with 131 yards on 20 carries and one TD. Hoover finished with 92 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Reid threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns He connected with Ra'Shawn Jones on a 62-yard pass for a touchdown in the second quarter the provided the 14-6 lead for the Little Giants at the time. Reid completed 18-of-24 pass attempts in the game. Oliver Page and Matt Penola each made five receptions. Jones led all Wabash receivers with 62 yards on one catch.
 
The Little Giants held Wooster to 113 rushing yards in 35 attempts and no touchdowns. Renteria threw for 227 yards and three scores, completing 22-of-35 passes with one interception. Page led Wabash with eight tackles, six going for solo stops, along with the interception. Jackson Garrett finished seven tackles. The Little Giants sacked Wooster four times and recorded eight tackles for losses of 29 total yards.
 
Wabash begins a two-game road trip next Saturday when the Little Giants head to Denison University for a 3 p.m. contest.
