Wabash junior
Michael Tanchevski curled a shot attempt inside the crossbar in the second overtime to give the Little Giant soccer team a key road victory at Allegheny Saturday afternoon.
Â
Tanchevski fired two shots goal, connecting in the third minute of the second overtime to keep Wabash (9-1-1, 2-0 NCAC) undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Little Giants are off to their best start to the season since 2014 when the team opened with victories in the first five matches of the year and a 10-0-2 record through the first 12 matches of the year.
Â
Wabash put nine shots on goal compared to seven for Allegheny (3-6-1, 0-1-1 NCAC). Tanchevski and
Corbin Kaiser each finished with two shots on goal apiece. Goalkeeper
Chad Wunderlich earned his seventh solo shutout of the season with seven saves in 14 shot attempts for the host Gators. He is two blank sheets away from tying the single-season record of nine shutouts turned in by Dayton Jennings in 2015.
Â
"We got off to a bit of a slow start," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We didn't have a great first 45 minutes, or at least a first 20 minutes of the match. We just didn't play well. But I'm proud of the guys and the way they came back in the second half. We made a small change in formation and really dominated the second half. We were a little unlucky as we hit the post twice on shot attempts in regulation. We just kept fighting and found a way to get a goal.
Â
"It was an ugly win, but three points for the conference victory is three points and we'll take them, especially against a well-organized opponent like Allegheny."
Â
Wabash gets a week off until returning to the pitch October 6 against conference co-leader Kenyon College (9-1-1, 2-0 NCAC). The match begins at 1 p.m. at Fischer Field in Crawfordsville.
