Wabash Handles Mount St. Joseph With 5-2 Home Victory

Wabash shuffled its lineup Tuesday for a non-conference soccer match against Mount St. Joseph University. Thirty players saw action in the match for the Little Giants in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Lions.

"This was a good performance this evening," Wabash head coach Chris Keller said. "We finished shots and did a good job of creating opportunities. The performance by the players in the game allowed us to rest some other guys who have played a majority of minutes in the previous matches. It gave an opportunity for other players to step in and play, and everyone took advantage of those chances. I was a little disappointed with the two goals we gave up but that will happen when you have some younger players with less experience on the field. That provides a chance to learn from those situations. It's also great to have Timothy Herring back and have a chance to get him into the game for a few minutes."

Herring was one of four Wabash (6-3-1) players to score in the contest. Justin Kopp tallied the first goal of the game for the Little Giants in the 19th minute. He delivered his third goal of the year off a crossing pass from the right side off the foot of Austin Hughes for the freshman's team-best third assist of the season. Mount St. Joseph (2-8) answered with an equalizing goal in the 26th minute before Jesus Rodrigo Del Real notched his third goal of the year. Del Real collected a pass from Alexis Delgado in the 34th minute to provide the 2-1 Wabash lead and give Delgado his second assist of the season.

Abdoulie Waggeh added his first goal of the season after Del Real was taken down in the penalty box by the Lion's goalkeeper. Waggeh drilled the penalty shot into the right side of the net for a 3-1 Wabash lead at the break.

The Little Giants took advantage of some offensive pressure in the early minutes of the second half. A pass across the front of the goal box by Coledon Johnson was tapped into the net by a Mount St. Joseph defender for a Wabash own goal and a 4-1 lead. Herring picked up his first goal of the year with a blast from the right side in the 87th minute on a pass delivered by Hamza Moudden for his first assist of the season. The Lions added a second goal in the 88th minute to provide the 5-2 final.

Wabash goalkeeper Michael Bertram made one save on three shots on goal by Mount St. Joseph. The Little Giants delivered 18 total shot attempts and seven shots on goal in the contest.

The Little Giants return to the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Saturday with a road contest at Hiram College beginning at 1 p.m.
