Little Giants Score First-Ever Win Over OWU With 1-0 Victory

Coledon Johnson scored in the 47th minute for Wabash and Chad Wunderlich made a pair of key saves in the closing minutes to secure a 1-0 win Saturday by the Little Giants over Ohio Wesleyan University.

The victory is the first in Wabash soccer history over the Battling Bishops. OWU, ranked 16th in the latest D3soccer.com poll, came into Saturday's match holding a 26-0-2 record over Wabash dating back to the first match, a 1-1 draw, between the two schools in 1977.

Wabash (10-4-2, 5-1-1) played even on the scoreboard against Ohio Wesleyan (10-4-3, 5-1-1 NCAC) despite the visitors owning 62 percent of ball possession through the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Little Giants tallied the lone goal of the match at the start of the second period. Justin Kopp lifted a ball into the box. Michael Tanchevski collected the pass and found Johnson for the shot attempt. The freshman forward slipped the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Little Giants got two big saves from Wunderlich in the final seven minutes of the contest. With Ohio Wesleyan pressing its offensive attack, Cristian Gomez fired a shot from the right side that slammed off Wunderlich as he slid across the rain-soaked turf between Gomez and the goal. One minute later OWU's Dom Calabrese fired a shot toward the left side of the goal that Wunderlich again turned aside to preserve the shutout. Wunderlich finished with five total saves in the match.

Wabash put four shots on goal in the contest. Ohio Wesleyan owned a 12-to-8 advantage in total shot attempts.

Wabash earned three points with the win to move into a tie in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with Ohio Wesleyan, each with a total of 16 points. Kenyon is the conference leader with a total of 17 points. DePauw and Oberlin moved into a tie for fourth place with 12 points apiece. The top-four teams in the final regular season standings advance to the NCAC Tournament scheduled to begin on Wednesday, November 6.

The Little Giants are on the road for their final two games of the regular season beginning with a 7 p.m. match Wednesday at DePauw University.
