Wabash Powers Past Earlham 85-72

Wabash outscored Earlham by 20 points inside the paint in the Little Giants' 85-72 victory Tuesday evening at Chadwick Court.
 
The 14th-ranked Wabash squad (1-1) put four players in double figures, including the 14th career double-double by senior post Harrison Hallstrom. He finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
 
Jack Davidson scored 19 points to move past Brian Latham '00 and into 15th place on the Wabash all-time scoring list with 1,170 points. Davidson also handed out seven assists to help Wabash to a team total of 16 assists.
 
Both Wabash and Earlham (2-1) traded early baskets in the first four minutes of the game before the Little Giants used a 5-0 run to move in front 11-6. Earlham closed the gap with five consecutive points before Wabash expanded its lead to 28-16 with 7:14 left in the first half on a Connor Rotterman three-pointer off one of Davidson's assists. The lead stretched to 17 on a three-point shot from Kellen Schreiber off another pass from Davidson for a 43-26 Wabash advantage. The half ended with a basket by Earlham's Jamel Barnes to provide the 45-30 score at the half in favor of the Little Giants.
 
Earlham closed the gap to seven points in the second half on a pair of Blake Bonin free throws. A basket from Davidson and a pair of free throws by Ahmoni Jones extended the lead back to double digits at 54-42 with 12:34 left to play in the game. The Quakers made one final run with less than seven minutes remaining when Barnes drained a three-point shot to make it a 69-61 contest in favor of Wabash. Barnes led Earlham in scoring with 24 points.
 
Free throws from Rotterman and Davidson put Wabash up 73-61. Earlham never got the lead under double digits the remainder of the game with Wabash claiming the 85-72 win for its first victory of the season.
 
The Little Giants scored 24 points in the paint in the final 20 minutes to help offset 10 turnovers that lead to nine points for Earlham. Wabash limited the Quakers to 3-of-15 shooting from three-point range in the game, including a 0-for-7 effort in the first half. Wabash finished the game 32-of-57 from the field for 56.1 percent shooting. The Little Giants connected on 7-of-19 three-point tries (36.8 percent) and were 14-of-20 from the free throw line (70 percent).
 
Schreiber and Tyler Watson each scored 12 points for Wabash in the victory. The Quakers put four players in double digits in scoring as well. Kenneth Stalling, Jr. finished with 17 points. John Sakaleros added 11 points and Bonin tossed in 10 points.
 
Wabash hits the road for the first time this season in the coming weekend. The Little Giants will play in the Nicholas Investments Thanksgiving Tournament at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Wabash opens against Greenville University Friday at 5 p.m. (CST). The Little Giants will face either Carroll or Simpson College on Saturday.
