First Half Sends Wabash To 31-12 Home Win Over Kenyon

Wabash dominated the first half of its North Coast Athletic Conference football game against Kenyon College. The Little Giants owned a 31-0 halftime lead before settling for a 31-12 victory over the visiting Lords.

Wabash (6-2, 6-1 NCAC) held Kenyon (3-5, 2-5 NCAC) to 67 rushing yards. The Little Giants ran for 244 yards and one touchdown. Isaac Avant ran for 138 yards on 28 carries. He moved into sixth place on the Wabash career rushing list with a total of 2,731 yards, passing Little Giant legend Stan Huntsman with 2,595 career rushing yards.

Quarterback Liam Thompson threw for 244 yards and a season-best three touchdowns. Thompson completed 16-of-21 passes.

The Little Giants scored on their first three offensive drives of the game. Schuyler Nehrig provided an early 3-0 lead with a 25-yard field goal. Cooper Sullivan added to the Wabash scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run to cap a five-play, 55-yard drive.

The next Wabash offensive possession needed only one play to find the end zone. Thompson connected with Devon Anderson on a 56-yard TD pass after the sophomore receiver slipped behind the Kenyon defenders for the easy score and a 17-0 lead.

Jackson Smith-Clayborne caught his first career touchdown pass by hauling in a nine-yard throw from Thompson to extend the Wabash lead to 24-0. Anderson added the final touchdown for the Little Giants with 31 seconds remaining in the first half when he caught a 13-yard pass from Thompson for a score. Anderson led the Wabash receiving corps with three catches for 74 yards and two TDs.

Kenyon scored twice in the fourth quarter on touchdown throws from four-year starting quarterback Thomas Merkle. Merkle became the all-time leader in NCAC history for completions with a 20-of-37 effort for 167 yards. He threw one interception for the Little Giants' only turnover generated for the game. Merkle's 20 completions give him 1,014 to surpass the mark of 1,004 career completions by Ohio Wesleyan's Mason Espinosa.

Wabash recorded eight tackles for losses in the game, led by Brandon Yeagy with 3-1/2 for a total of 10 yards. Yeagy led the team in total tackles with nine. Seth Buresh made the only sack of the game for Wabash as part of three tackles and two tackles for losses totaling 10 yards. Artie Equihua picked off the Merkle pass for his first interception of the season and the seventh of the year for the Little Giants.

Wabash remains in first place in the NCAC standings with victory, tied with Denison University with a 6-1 conference record after the Big Red easily handled DePauw University Saturday afternoon with a 42-7 win.

The Little Giants play their final home game of the season next Saturday when Hiram College comes to Crawfordsville for a 1 p.m. contest. The game will be the final contest played at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. The 53-year-old structure will be demolished to make way for a new Little Giant Stadium that will serve as the home for the Wabash football team beginning with the 2020 season.
