Wabash Closes Hollett Little Giant Stadium With Shutout Win, NCAC Title

Wabash celebrated its final football game at historic Hollett Little Giant Stadium in style Saturday. The Little Giants shutout Hiram College 24-0 to claim at least a share of the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference championship.

Wabash (7-2, 7-1 NCAC) will build a new Little Giant Stadium on the site of the current facility that was dedicated in 1966. Saturday's victory over Hiram (0-9, 0-8 NCAC) marked the 205th in the structure that has also seen Wabash earn eight previous NCAC titles. The Wabash win, combined with a 19-10 loss by Denison University, put the Little Giants up one game over the second-place teams in the league with one regular season game remaining. The Little Giants also won titles in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015, and 2018. The 2019 title gives Wabash back-to-back conference titles for the first time since the four-year streak from 2005-2008.

The Little Giants scored twice in the first quarter on a pair of five-yard plays. Isaac Avant ran for a five-yard TD midway through the period for the only score the Little Giants would need for the win. Avant ran for 112 yards on 29 attempts. Liam Thompson added a five-yard TD pass to Cooper Sullivan late in the first quarter. Thompson completed 17-of-26 passes for 155 yards with one interception. Sullivan led the Wabash receivers with six catches for 57 yards.

Sullivan added one more first-half score on a 14-yard end around run in the second period. Schuyler Nehrig scored the final points at Hollett Little Giant Stadium with a 27-yard fourth quarter field goal in the closing minutes of the ball game.

The Wabash defense held Hiram to 56 rushing yards and 187 yards of total offense. The Little Giants produced a season-high eight sacks for 56 yards. Malcolm Lang led the defense with 2-1/2 sacks for 20 yards. Seth Buresh added two sacks for 14 yards. Brandon Yeagy made 1-1/2 sacks for nine yards. Brock Heffron made nine tackles to lead the defense, including a sack for seven yards. David Marsh and Blair Broady each finished with one-half of a sack. Jose Franco generated the lone turnover of the game for the Wabash defense with an interception of Hiram quarterback Xavier Reyero in the second quarter.

Wabash will travel south to Greencastle, Indiana on Saturday, November 16 to play DePauw University in the 126th Monon Bell Classic. Kickoff for the annual rivalry is set for 1:07 p.m. Complete information for purchasing ticket, parking, and game coverage is available at https://sports.wabash.edu/mononbellinfo.
