Wabash played its final 2019 regular season soccer match Saturday afternoon at Oberlin College. The two teams went into overtime before the host Yeomen scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the first extra period to send the Little Giants home with a 1-0 loss.
Â
Wabash (10-5-3, 5-2-2 NCAC) finished third in the NCAC regular season standings despite the loss to Oberlin (8-10, 5-4 NCAC). The Little Giants earned a berth in the upcoming NCAC Tournament set to begin on Wednesday. Wabash will travel to second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. contest. The Little Giants defeated OWU 1-0 earlier this season for the first victory over the Battling Bishops in school history.
Â
The Little Giants matched Oberlin for shots on goal in the game with each finishing with six. Oberlin held a 16-13 edge in total shot attempts. Wabash fired two shot attempts in the closing minutes of regulation. One hit the post to just miss a chance to put the game away for the Little Giants. The other was stopped by Oberlin goalkeeper Fiachra McDonaugh, one of his six saves in the match.
Chad Wunderlich recorded five saves for Wabash.
Â
David Riggs and
Mitchell Keeling each finished with two shots on goal to lead Wabash on offense.
Â
The Yeomen scored the game-winning goal in the 94
th minute on a quick transition play. Michael Candelori drove a ball into the box on a crossing pass that found Jack McMillin for his fourth goal of the season. The victory, combined with a
4-0 DePauw loss at Kenyon, put Oberlin into the conference tournament as the fourth seed.
Â
"We played well, especially in the second half," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We created some chances and hit the posts twice. We're a little disappointed we didn't get the ball in the net, particularly the ball bouncing just off the post with about four minutes left. We knew we would be in third place in the NCAC standings with a tie or a win, so we played more aggressive in the second half going for the win and then just see what happened in the other games around the conference. We took some extra chances in overtime to try and get the win. Give Oberlin credit for catching us in transition on the break and scored on a good ball in the box and a strong finish for the goal.
Â
"The game brought an end to a great regular season for us. Some great wins and tough battles. Now we look forward to Wednesday when a new season will start with the conference tournament."
