Big Innings Move Wabash To .500 With Sweep Of Manchester

Wabash moved to .500 for the season thanks to a pair of seven-run innings Tuesday afternoon in the Little Giants' two-game sweep of Manchester. Wabash posted wins of 11-9 and 11-8 over the Spartans at Goodrich Ballpark in non-conference action.

Wabash (7-7) scored seven runs in the second inning of game one, thanks in part to a three-run home run by Matthew Annee. Eric Chavez produced the first run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk. Jackson Blevins cleared the bases two batters later with a triple. A walk to Andrew Jumonville put runners on the corners for Annee. The sophomore smashed a pitch over the right field fence for his second home run of the season to stake Wabash to a 7-0 lead.

The Little Giants added another run in the third with an RBI single by Sean Roginski and one in the fourth with a run-scoring double off the bat of Erich Lange.

Manchester (2-11) began to close the gap by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning, adding one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make the score 9-6. Wabash tacked on to runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Annee picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single by Lange to extend the lead to 11-6. The visiting Spartans cut into the lead with three runs in the ninth before Kevin O'Donnell recorded the final out for Wabash in one inning of relief work on the mound.

Tyler Dearing earned his second win of the season, pitching six innings and holding Manchester to eight hits and three walks while striking out three. He allowed three earned runs in the starting effort. Parker Noll limited the Spartans to two unearned runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings of relief work. O'Donnell closed out the game with a four-hit effort in the ninth inning.

Annee drove in four runs with two hits. Blevins finishes with three RBI in game one, while Lange drove in a pair of runs on two hits. Chavez and Roginski both drove in runs for Wabash in the game, as well.

The Little Giants trailed 6-2 in game two after Manchester put up a five-spot in the top of the third inning. Wabash captured the lead with a seven-run fourth inning. Roginski drove in the first run of the fourth inning with a fielder's choice to shallow center. Blevins picked up two more runs with a double to extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 11. Jumonville added an RBI with a single ahead of a Canton Terry two-run double. Terry raced home after moving to third on a wild pitch and advancing on an errant throw by the Manchester catcher to give Wabash a 9-6 lead. The Little Giants added two more runs in the fifth inning with another RBI from Blevins off a single after Nick Chao stole third and scored on another throwing error by Manchester. The Spartans picked up two run in the sixth inning but were held scoreless throughout the remainder of the game.

Blevins collected three hits and three RBI to lead Wabash offensively. Chao added three hits and one RBI. Jumonville, Annee, and Terry added two hits apiece. Roginski, Joe House, and Chavez each added one hit to the Little Giants' totals for the game.

Eric Murphy picked up the win in relief of starter Julian Rutherford. Murphy pitched 2-2/3 innings of three-hit baseball. He allowed two runs with three walks and struck out one. Erik Lakomek worked the final four innings of the game, shutting out Manchester on four hits and one walk. He struck out three of the 17 batters he faced.

Wabash continues its home stand this weekend when the Little Giants welcome Edgewood College to Goodrich Ballpark for a three-game series. The two teams will play a single game on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. prior to a pair of games Sunday starting at noon.
