Erich Lange belted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to draw Wabash even with Allegheny in the two team's opening North Coast Athletic Conference baseball game of 2019. The host Gators rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 3-2 win. Game two between the two teams was suspended in the second inning due to rain.
Â
Wabash (10-8, 0-1 NCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning off an RBI single by
Matthew Annee to score
Jackson Blevins from third. Lange followed with a two-out single in the inning to put Annee in scoring position but the Little Giants were unable to capitalize.
Â
Allegheny (8-7, 1-0 NCAC) took the lead with a two-run seventh inning off of starter
Kase Lawson. The sophomore right-hander held the Gators to two runs on three hits and one walk through 6-1/3 innings while striking out three batters. Lawson gave way to freshman
Dylan Scheid who pitched the final four innings of the game.
Â
Lange opened the top of the ninth inning by depositing the baseball over the left field fence for his first home run of the season and second of his career. The Little Giants went down in order after Lange tied the game, sending the Gators to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Allegheny opened the frame with a double to right field. Wabash head coach intentionally walked the next batter to keep the possible double play in order. The Gators laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second and third with one out. Another intentional walk loaded the bases before Max Sessions delivered the game-winning base hit to left center to give the Gators the 3-2 victory.
Â
Scheid took the loss for Wabash, allowing four hits and one earned run in two innings of work. He struck out one batter along with the two intentional walks. Sean Kealey went the distance for Allegheny, pitching all nine innings and limiting Wabash to six hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts.
Â
Lange led the Wabash offense with three hits in four at-bats with one RBI. Annee added a hit and a walk with one RBI.
Â
In addition to game two between the two teams being suspended due to poor weather conditions, Sunday's scheduled nine-inning contest at Baldwin Wallace has been postponed to later in the season. No makeup date has been scheduled at this time. Wabash will travel to Springfield, Ohio on Wednesday to play Wittenberg University in a pair of NCAC contests beginning at 1 p.m.
