Wabash rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits in Saturday's soccer match at Olivet College in Michigan to force a 2-2 double overtime tie with the Comets.
Â
The Little Giants (4-3-1) surrendered a goal in the 24th minute on a shot by Jesus Escalante to give Olivet (3-3-1) the lead.
Justin Kopp answered four minutes later with his first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
Joshua Scott provided the assist on Kopp's game-tying shot.
Â
The Comets regained the lead four minutes into the second half off a misplayed ball by Wabash for a goal by Dean Failer for a 2-1 Olivet lead. The host squad held the advantage until the 78th minute when
Jesus Rodrigo Del Real scored his second goal of the year to tie the match at 2-2.
Â
Neither team scored in the final 12 minutes of regulation. Wabash put two shots on goal in the first overtime period and
Keith Owen fired an attempt that struck the post in the second ten-minute extra session before the contest ended in the 2-2 draw.
Â
"This was an interesting game, to say the least," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "I was really happy about the mental strength the team showed coming back from a 2-1 deficit, especially considering they took the lead on what was basically an own goal on an unfortunate misplayed header. Other than that play we really dominated the second half and scored a good goal to force overtime. I thought we played well both overtime periods. We hit the post with a shot in overtime. We dug ourselves out of a hole and were able to play well against a good opponent in Olivet."
Â
Wabash fired 18 total shots in the game compared to five shot attempts by Olivet. Wabash goalkeeper
Chad Wunderlich recorded three saves against five shots on goal by the Comets. The Little Giants finished with nine corner kicks versus one for Olivet.
Â
Wabash returns to action at noon on Saturday against The College of Wooster at Fischer Field to begin North Coast Athletic Conference action. The game is part of the Wabash College Homecoming Weekend festivities.
