Soccer Opens NCAC Play With 3-0 Homecoming Win Over Wooster

The Wabash soccer team celebrated Homecoming with a 3-0 victory Saturday over The College of Wooster to claim a victory in the Little Giants' opening North Coast Athletic Conference match of the season.

Wabash (5-3-1, 1-0 NCAC) faced an aggressive offensive attack from the Scots (4-6, 0-1 NCAC) throughout the contest. Chad Wunderlich and the Wabash defense kept Wooster off the scoreboard. Wunderlich recorded seven saves to earn his third complete-game shutout of the season.

The Little Giants scored their first goal 15 minutes into the match. David Riggs collected a crossing pass from Austin Hughes on the right side of the penalty box and drilled a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Wabash lead.

Alexis Delgado notched his third goal of the year with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute. Justin Kopp broke free from a group of defenders in the final minute of play and launched a shot into the net for his second goal in as many games to provide the 3-0 final.

Wooster outshot Wabash 10-9 and held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal for the game.

"Top to bottom this was an absolutely great performance from our guys today," Wabash head coach Chris Keller said. "We were very disciplined with no lapses in concentration. I was really happy with our start in the match. We started five freshmen and they held their own in their first NCAC game. We got great play from the back line and Chad the entire game. We also were able to finish today with good goals from Riggs, Delgado, and Kopp. I'm really proud of the effort. The players really wanted to win that game and start conference play off on a high note.

"Now we look forward to our final non-conference game on Tuesday where some other younger players may get an opportunity to play."

Wabash will play host to Mount St. Joseph University Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at Fischer Field.
