Defense Dominant in 3-0 Soccer Win Over Earlham

The Wabash defense dominated Earlham throughout Wednesday evening's home-opening soccer match against the Quakers. Two early goals from Alexis Delgado and a second-half score from Kyle Holmer sent the Little Giants to a 3-0 victory and a 2-0 start to the season.

Wabash possessed the ball for nearly 60 percent of the match and held Earlham (0-2-1) without a shot attempt over the course of the 90-minute contest. The Little Giants finished the match with 18 total shots and nine shots on goal with Delgado and Abdoulie Waggeh tallying two shots on goal apiece to lead the team.

Delgado produced the game-winning goal 2:50 into the contest. The freshman drilled a shot from the top of the box into the left corner of the goal off a pass from Austin Hughes for his first collegiate goal and a 1-0 Wabash lead. Delgado made it 2-0 ten minutes later when David Riggs slipped past a defender in the left corner and passed the ball to Justin Kopp. Kopp delivered a touch pass to Delgado for the easy goal.

Holmer's goal came four minutes into the second half on a restart by Jesus Flores Daccarett. Daccarett's free kick slipped past two players in the box and found Holmer racing in from the right side for his first goal of the season.

Chad Wunderlich and Michael Bertram combined for the shutout victory for Wabash.

"I'm pleased with the performance by the team today and the way we possessed the ball and attacked Earlham," Wabash head coach Chris Keller said. "We gambled a little bit and went with a lot of freshmen players to start the game. There are still some things to clean up heading into a very tough weekend against two quality opponents. We were hoping to get a quick jump on Earlham and give our veteran players a little bit of rest heading into the weekend schedule at Wilmington. I'm glad we were able to preserve some legs in today's match and get a lot of players into the contest."

The Little Giants will face Grove City College on Friday at 5 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio. The host Wilmington College Quakers will play Adrian College in the opening game Friday afternoon. Wabash will play Adrian Saturday at 1 p.m.
