Wabash and Adrian played to a scoreless tie in the first half of Saturday's Wilmington Kiwanis Soccer Classic in Ohio. The Little Giants lost for the first time this season as Adrian scored three goals in the final period to claim a 3-0 victory.
Â
Wabash (3-1) put up nine shots in the game but was limited to two shots on goal overall. Both attempts came in the first half. Adrian (3-0) finished with 11 total shot attempts and six shots on goal. Wabash goalkeeper
Chad Wunderlich produced two saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs' Zach Combs delivered the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute to give Adrian the victory. Â The Bulldogs added a second goal from Garrett Miller in the 76th minutes on a penalty kick before Grant Perrine closed out the game with the final goal in the 86th minute.
Â
"We played solid as a team in the first half," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We had three or four chances to get a goal in the first 30 or 40 minutes. We just weren't as tuned in and focused as we have been in the first three matches. The second half got a little chippy and physical. We made a couple of mistakes in the midfield and back line and Adrian took advantage. That's why they're one of the better teams in their conference.
Â
"I'm disappointed with the result knowing that we had good run of play in the first half and had opportunities to try and go in front and have a chance to win the game. That didn't happen and Adrian took it to us in the second half. We didn't play well enough to deserve a victory at the end of the day."
Â
Joseph Kaefer and
Adam Berg each recorded shots on goal for Wabash with Kaefer and
Alexis Delgado leading the team with two total shot attempts apiece.
Â
Both teams were whistled for 14 fouls for a total of 28 in the match with Wabash picking up the lone yellow card of the afternoon late in the contest.
Â
Wabash returns home for a Wednesday afternoon match against Rose-Hulman beginning at 5 p.m. at Fischer Field.
