Wabash Opens Arizona Trip With Victories Over Bethany Lutheran, Carthage

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wabash swept its first two games in Arizona on Sunday as part of the team's annual spring break trip. The Little Giants knocked off Bethany Lutheran 9-4 in the first contest. Wabash added an 8-7 victory in 10 innings over Carthage College in the second contest.
 
Sean Smith had a huge day for Wabash (4-1). The junior hit his first career home run in the first game. He added a two-run homer in game two as part of three hits in the game. He smashed a two-run double to right center field to extend the Little Giants' lead to 7-3. Smith went on to earn the win in game two after Carthage (2-1) tied the game in the late innings.
 
Wabash took the lead in the 10th inning thanks to a base-loaded balk by Carthage reliever Aaron Steinhoff. Zach Moffett came on in the bottom of the tenth and retired the side to earn his second save of the season.
 
The Little Giants trailed Bethany Lutheran (0-2) after the Vikings scored a run in the second inning. Freshman Josh Weidenbenner drove in a pair of runs with a single to give the Little Giants the lead they would never relinquish. Drew Prather, Austin Simmers, Cole Visillo, and Weidenbenner combined for eight hits batting sixth through ninth for Wabash. Prather collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs in the game. Simmers added three hits to the total and scored one run. Vasillo picked up a hit and a walk in his first collegiate start.
 
Tyler Dearing improved to 2-0 on the season. The junior starter worked six innings and scattered five hits. He allowed three runs and five walks while recording eight strikeouts to match his single-game best mark. Eric Lakomek pitched two innings in relief and struck out three batters while giving up two hits and one run. Moffett closed out the game by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
 
Wabash continues its spring break schedule on Monday with games against Wheaton College and Waldorf University from Iowa beginning at 9 a.m. MST (12 p.m. EDT).
