Wabash took a 4-0 lead in its second game of the 2021 Great Lakes Invitational versus 13th-ranked Emory University and never trailed, defeating the Eagles 98-90.
The victory marked the 100th for head coach
Kyle Brumett in his eight seasons at Wabash and the 236th overall win in his career.
One day after Wabash (2-2) struggled with its outside shooting. The Little Giants shot 33-of-59 for 55.9 percent from the field and connected on 12-of-27 three-point tries (44.4 percent). Emory (1-2) hit 31-of-71 shots overall (43.7 percent) but were limited to 3-of-19 shooting from three-point range (15.8 percent) for the game.
Wabash expanded its early four-point lead to seven points at 13-6 four minutes into the game.
Jack Davidson scored two of his game-high 29 points on a jumper in the lane. His basket was sandwiched by a two-point shot from
Ahmoni Jones and a three-point basket from the junior forward.
Jones shot 4-of-8 from the field in the first half and finished with 18 points. Jones' 24-points in the Little Giants' Friday night loss to third-ranked Emory. earned him a spot on the All-Invitational Team.
Avery Beaver came off the bench to hit a pair of three-point baskets to help Wabash push the lead to double digits. The Little Giants eventually took a 16-point lead with 2:10 left in the opening period on a three-pointer from Davidson before three late baskets cut the lead to 52-42 at the half.
Emory used its up-tempo offense to go on a 15-4 run through the early minutes of the second half. The Eagles scored 10 fast-break points and cut the Wabash lead to five points at 56-51 four minutes into the second half. Wabash answered with a three-pointer from
Tyler Watson, a layup from
Reis Thomas, and a three-point basket by
Jesse Hall to move back in front by 13 points. Emory cut the lead to six points with nine minutes remaining and once again in the final 30 seconds. Davidson connected on his final two free throws to secure the eight-point victory.
In addition to Davidson's 29 points and 18 from Jones, Watson scored 19 points and handed out six assists. Hall scored 14 points in 10 minutes of court time by hitting six of his seven shot attempts.
Matthew Schner paced Emory with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Logan Shanahan came off the bench to score 18 points. Nick Stuck added 15 points.
Wabash opens the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Sunday, November 28, at Denison University.
