Four Wabash basketball players scored in double figures in the Little Giants' 92-87 North Coast Athletic Conference opening win at Denison University Sunday afternoon.
Wabash (3-2, 1-0 NCAC) shot 55.7 percent from the field and were a perfect 16-of-16 from the free throw line, including a pair of charity tosses from
Kellen Schreiber with 4:26 left in the game to provide the Little Giants the final lead of the contest.
Wabash led by four points five minutes into the second half after holding a 46-45 edge at halftime. The Big Red (1-5, 0-1 NCAC) moved in front 66-58 thanks to a 12-0 scoring run over the next three minutes.
Reis Thomas ended that stretch with a fastbreak layup but the Big Red answered with a basket and free throw from Darren Rubin to move in front 69-60 with 9:37 left in the contest.
Schreiber scored a layup and two free throws to get Wabash back to within five points ahead of a three-point basket from
Jack Davidson to draw the Little Giants to a two-point deficit at 69-67. John Faller put Denison back up by four points at 71-67 with 7:13 left in the game.
Davidson connected on his two free throw attempts then added a layup with 5:38 showing on the clock to tie the game at 71-71.
Tyler Watson grabbed the rebound of a missed Denison shot attempt before Schreiber's layup gave Wabash the lead with 5:03 remaining. The Big Red hit one of their 11 three-point shots in the game to take a 74-73 lead before the two free throws from Schreiber put the Little Giants up 75-74 at the 4:26 mark.
Ahmoni Jones stretched the lead to three points with a layup with 3:55 on the clock. Watson added a layup on the next Wabash trip up the floor to answer two free throws from the Big Red.
The Wabash lead bounced back and forth between one and three points before Watson nailed a three-point basket with 2:04 left in the game. Denison cut the lead to one point with a three-pointer from Will Hunter. Davidson scored at the other end for Wabash, then a blocked shot by
Vinny Buccilla and a Jones rebound led to a basket by Schreiber to push the lead back to five points (88-83) in the final 32 seconds. Watson closed out the game with four free throws to answer two baskets by Denison to lock up the victory for the Little Giants.
Wabash finished the game 34-of-61 from the field (55.7 percent) and connected on 8-of-18 three-point tries (44.4 percent). The Little Giants' 16-for-16 effort from the free-throw line provided a six-point scoring differential as Denison went 10-of-14 from the line. The Big Red shot 33-of-70 from the field (47.1 percent) and went 11-of-27 from three-point range (40.7 percent).
Davidson led the Little Giants in scoring with 27 points. He hit both of his free throw attempts in the game, giving him 533 made free throws for his career. Davidson is three makes away from breaking the Little Giants' record of 535 career free throws made set by Chad Tabor '99.
Schreiber and Watson finished with 22 points apiece for Wabash. Jones scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Rubin led Denison with 24 points. Hunter scored 14 points and Kevin Cheng added 11 points.
The Little Giants return to Chadwick Court for a non-conference home game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Rose-Hulman.
