Free Throws Tell The Tale In Wabash Win Over Rose

Davidson sets new Wabash made free throw record; Watson's two free throws ice the game

On a night that Jack Davidson broke the Wabash career made free throws record it was two free throws from Tyler Watson that locked up a 67-64 win for the Little Giants over Rose-Hulman at Chadwick Court.

Davidson made a free throw on a three-point play five minutes into the second half for the 536th of his career to break the former Wabash record of 535 held by Chad Tabor '99.

Watson came into Wednesday evening's game averaging 18.2 points a game but was held to four points by the visiting Fightin' Engineers. Two of those points came at the free throw line with five seconds remaining in the game. Wabash (4-2) held an eight-point lead with 2:51 remaining in the contest when Rose-Hulman (3-2) got two free throws from Dillon Duff to cut the lead to 65-59. Rose made another basket with 1:11 remaining, then cut the Wabash lead to one point at 65-64 on a basket by Max Chaplin.

The Little Giants missed their next shot attempt, but Watson snared the rebound and drew a foul with five ticks on the clock. He hit both shots of the one-and-one situation to push the lead back to three points. Rose missed a desperation three at the buzzer to finish the contest.

Wabash won despite a tough shooting night from long range. The Little Giants hit 10-of-33 shots from three-point range for 30.3 percent while going 25-of-62 from the field overall for 40.3 percent.

The Little Giants took an early 6-0 lead only to see Rose score the next 11 points to take an 11-6 edge three minutes into the game. The visitors held a six-point advantage at halftime, 34-28, and stretched the lead to 11 in the first minute of the second half. Wabash ripped off a 19-6 scoring run over the next seven minutes, eventually taking a 47-45 lead on a three-pointer from Jesse Hall.

The two teams traded leads until Watson handed out one of his career-best eight assists by finding Reis Thomas for a layup. Watson followed with his only basket of the game to push the lead to three points ahead of a three-point basket from Ahmoni Jones.

Kellen Scheiber scored with 2:51 remaining to extend the advantage to eight points at 65-57. Duff's free throws cut the lead to six and set up the last series of plays.

Davidson led Wabash in scoring with 16 points. Jones added 15 points and nine rebounds. Schreiber scored 13 points and snared seven boards.

Chaplin and Terry Hicks each scored 13 points to lead Rose-Hulman on offense. Duff added 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.

Wabash returns to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday with a home game against Oberlin College at 2 p.m.
