Early Wabash Lead Wilts Away in Two-Point Loss To Oberlin

Wabash saw a 17-point first-half lead evaporate in the second half in an 87-85 home loss to Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference basketball played Saturday afternoon at Chadwick Court.

Wabash (4-3, 1-1 NCAC) came out out red-hot from start, scoring the first eight points of the game before eventually leading 36-19 with 8:03 left in the first half. Oberlin (3-4, 1-1 NCAC) kept cutting into the lead. The Yeomen used an 11-0 scoring run to get as close as two points at halftime with the score 43-41 in favor of Wabash.

The Little Giants maintained their advantage in the second half. A basket from Tyler Watson with 15:24 remaining in the game built the cushion back up to 10 points at 55-45. Once again, the visiting Yeomen mounted a rally, outscoring Wabash 9-0 over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 55-54.

Wabash regained a five-point margin twice in the final 12 minutes of play before a three-point basket from Dorde Otasevic and free throws from Wolf Moser tied the game at 63-63. The two teams traded baskets before Oberlin put together a 4-0 run to jump in front 71-67.

The Little Giants tied the game at 80-80 with 2:46 remaining when Jack Davidson canned a three-point jumper for two of his 17 points in the game. Once again Oberlin responded by scoring the next six points to take an 86-80 lead in the final 30 seconds of the game. Ahmoni Jones scored a layup to cut the lead to four points, but Yuuki Okubo hit one of his two free-throw attempts in the closing seconds to push the Yeomen lead back to five points. A Davison three-pointer ahead of the buzzer created the two-point final swinging in favor of the visitors from Oberlin.

Wabash shot 50.8 percent overall from the field, going 32-of-63 overall. The Little Giants finished 10-of-29 from three-point range and shot an uncharacteristic 64.7 percent from the free-throw line (11-of-17). Wabash came into the game averaging  85.5 percent free-throw shooting for the season.

Oberlin finished 30-of-57 from the field for 52.6 percent and shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from three-point range. The Yeomen went 14-of-21 from the free-throw line.
