Baseball Captures Saturday Sweep Over Trine

Wabash opened a four-game weekend baseball series against Trine University with a doubleheader against the visiting Thunder Saturday afternoon at Goodrich Ballpark. The Little Giants swept the two games with a 5-2 victory in game one followed by an 11-9 win in game two.

Kase Lawson threw eight strong innings for Wabash (5-5) in the game-one start against Trine (0-7). He limited the Thunder to two runs (one earned) along with seven hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Lawson improved to 2-1 for the year with the victory. Erik Lakomek retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning to lock down the win for the Little Giants.

Wabash trailed 1-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cole Vassilo started the scoring by blasting a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the score at 1-1. The hit was the first homer of Vassilo's college career. Austin Simmers drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line to put Wabash in front 3-1.

Andrew Jumonville added an RBI double to right in the fourth inning before Vassilo tacked on another RBI in the fifth with a double. He and Simmers finished with two hits and two RBI apiece in the game one victory.

Wabash took advantage of 13 hits along with five errors by Trine in game two. The Little Giants picked up four runs in the third inning and added another five in the fifth. Wabash had to hold on for the victory as the Thunder rallied for four runs in the seventh and added another in the ninth and put the tying run at the plate before the Little Giants closed out the game for the Saturday sweep.

Freshman AJ Reid went 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a walk. He also scored four runs. Drew Prather drove in a pair runs for Wabash. Simmers, Reid, Liam Patton, Vassilo, Sean Smith, and Kamden Early each drove in runs in the victory.

Tyler Dearing pitched six innings in the start to pick up the win. He struck out seven batters in the contest. Logan Butrum worked an inning in relief before giving way to Tavic Simmons for the final two innings of work.

The two teams close out the series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at Goodrich Ballpark beginning at noon.
