Wabash hit two grand slams and a total of six home runs in two baseball games at Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon for a sweep of the Battling Bishops. Wabash won game one by a score of 9-1 and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-5 win in game two.
Â
The Little Giants (13-11, 6-4 NCAC) got a grand slam from
Blake Juerling in the seventh inning of game one for Juerling's first career home run. Juerling's four-run bomb set the stage for a longball barrage in game two by Wabash. The Little Giants hit five home runs in the nightcap to tie for the second-most home runs in a game by a Wabash team. The Little Giants hit five home runs in 2003 at Earlham in 2006.
Â
Cole Vassilo matched Juerling's grand slam in game one with a four-run dinger in the second inning of game number two. The home run was the second of the season for Vassilo and part of a five-RBI afternoon in the second game. He leads the team with three home runs for the season.
Â
The excitement wasn't done yet for the Little Giants.
Noah Luebbehusen smashed a one-out home run to center in the third inning of game two.
AJ Reid hit his first career home run with two out and one on in the same inning to push Wabash lead to 10-0. Vassilo followed with his second of the game to provide back-to-back home runs for Wabash. Vassilo became the 18
th Little Giant to hit two home runs in a game and came up one short of tying the school record of three home runs in a game set by John Holm in 2010.
Â
Canton Terry joined the home run party in the next at bat by launching a solo home run to left center for his second career home run and first of the season and put the game out of reach at 12-0. No records could be found to this point showing any Wabash team ever hitting three consecutive home runs in a single inning. The Little Giants did hit three home runs in one inning against Wisconsin Lutheran in 2006 as part of a four home run game. Wabash hit back-to-back shots in that contest.
Â
The Wabash offense was clicking all day as the Little Giants produced 11 hits in game one and another 16 in game two. Vassilo collected three hits and five RBI in the second game and had four hits total in both games. Reid also had three hits and drove in three runs in game two. He added a hit and an RBI in game one, as well.
Â
Matthew Annee started the scoring for Wabash in game one with a two-run double in the first inning to provide all the run support starter
Kase Lawson would need. Annee finished with three RBI and two hits in the opening contest and drove in another run with one hit in the second game. Lawson tied his career high with eight strikeouts against Ohio Wesleyan (1-15, 0-10) while limiting the host Battling Bishops to one run on four hits and two walks. He improved to 4-3 on the season with the complete-game win.
Â
Dylan Scheid earned the victory in game two by pitching four innings of three-hit baseball. He held OWU to one unearned run while striking out four and walking two batters.
Sean Smith earned a three-inning save, his first of the season. He scattered five hits and gave up four runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Â
Wabash and Ohio Wesleyan will meet again on Saturday to conclude the four-game series between the two teams. The final two games will begin at 1 p.m. at Goodrich Ballpark on the Wabash campus. Attendance is limited to invited guests of members of the Wabash baseball team.
