Wabash Splits Home Doubleheader Versus Ohio Wesleyan

Wabash split a Saturday baseball doubleheader at Goodrich Ballpark versus Ohio Wesleyan University to win the four-game series against the Battling Bishops three games to one. The Little Giants won  game one 8-0 but were shut out in game two 2-0.

Wabash (14-12, 7-5 NCAC West) took an early 1-0 against OWU (2-16, 1-11 NCAC West) when Austin Simmers raced home on a passed ball in the first inning. The Little Giants tacked on four more runs in the third inning on a two-run single from Matthew Annee, and an RBI double by Brayden Lentz, and a sacrifice fly from Sean Smith. AJ Reid added an RBI single in the fourth ahead of another RBI double, this time from Smith, to extend the lead to 7-0. Smith scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly from Cameron Martin to provide the final run of the game.

Tavic Simmons took advantage of the offensive output by the Little Giants to earn his second win of the season on the mound. Simmons scattered five hits over seven innings to earn his first career shutout. He walked two batters and struck out a career-best four of the 26 batters he faced.

Andrew Jumonville collected three hits in four at bats in game one. Smith and Annee each drove in a pair of runs for the Little Giants.

Wabash had opportunities to score in game two but stranded five base runners over seven innings. Annee led off the fifth inning with a double to right field but could not advance as the next three Little Giant batters were retired in order. Wabash put together back-to-back one-out singles by Simmers and Jumonville in the sixth inning to put runners on the corners. Felix Valero walked to load the bases, but the next two batters both struck out to end the scoring threat.

Simmers led the offense with two of the Little Giants' six hits in game two. Jacob Bishop took the loss for Wabash. He pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and a season-high five strikeouts. Eric Lakomek worked three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter.

Wabash will play a non-conference two-game set at DePauw on Sunday, April 18 starting at noon. The Little Giants are 4-2 against the Tigers this season, including a doubleheader split in Greencastle on April 2.
