Wabash Celebrates Seniors With Doubleheader Sweep Over Wittenberg

Wabash honored the 10 members of its 2021 baseball team prior to sweeping a home doubleheader versus Wittenberg on Thursday to move into second place in the latest North Coast Athletic Conference West Division standings. The Little Giants won game one 9-5 before holding on for a 6-3 victory in game two.

Wabash (18-12, 9-5 NCAC West) seniors Matthew Annee, Logan Butrum, Tyler Dearing, Blake Juerling, Andrew Jumonville, Eric Lakomek, Kase Lawson, Cameron Martin, Sean Smith, and Canton Terry played their final games at Goodrich Ballpark Thursday afternoon, celebrating 77 career victories to this point in their careers with the two wins over Wittenberg (17-7, 6-4 NCAC West).

The Little Giants jumped out to a 7-2 lead by scoring four runs in the second inning and three more in the third after the visiting Tigers scored a run in the first and another in the third. Noah Luebbehusen drove in the first run for Wabash with a ground ball to score Cole Vassilo. Wabash added another run after a single by Felix Valero was misplayed by the Tigers to allow Terry to score from second. Austin Simmers brought in two more runs with his single to right field to put the Little Giants in front 4-1.

Kamden Earley drove in two runs in the fourth inning with his single through the left side. Valero added an RBI single up the middle to score Brayden Lentz and put Wabash up 7-2. Terry added an RBI single in the fourth and Simmers picked up another run with an RBI single in the fifth to provide a 9-3 lead.

The Tigers rallied with two runs in the sixth inning before Smith and Lakomek combined to end any chance for Wittenberg to close the gap anymore. Smith pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed only one walk. Lakomek closed out the final inning by retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout. Kase Lawson earned his fifth win of the season by pitching four innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed three runs (two earned) and one walk.

Wabash took a 1-0 lead in game two when Simmers scored on a dropped throw by the Tigers on a play at second. Wabash packed on four more runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Smith and RBi singles by Valero and Martin. Vasilo doubled down the left-field line in the sixth to extend his streak of safely reaching base to 16 games and drive in the sixth run of the game. Wittenberg scored three runs in the seventh inning and had runners on first and third before Lakomek ended the threat with a final ground out for the sweep.

Dylan Scheid improved to 4-0 for the season by pitching 6-1/3 innings and holding Wittenberg to three runs on three hits and five walks. He struck out five batters. Lakomek retired two batters and allowed two hits in his 2/3 of an inning of work in relief.

Simmers led the Wabash offense with four hits and three RBI in the two games. Valero, Terry, and Vassilo each collected three hits on the day. Valero drove in two runs, as did Earley and Smith.

Wabash enters the weekend trailing Denison University (14-8, 7-3 NCAC West) in the West Division standings after the Big Red lost both games at DePauw on Thursday. The Little Giants will conclude the conference portion of the 2021 schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader at Wittenberg with the first game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Denison will play DePauw at home Saturday and will play Wittenberg in a four-game series next week.
