Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Rally Can't Lift Wabash To Win Over Denison

Wabash rallied for a run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings in its North Coast Athletic Conference baseball game against Denison University. The Little Giants were unable to bring home the go-ahead run, losing 10-8 to the visiting Big Red in the second game of the doubleheader. Denison won game one by a score of 10-2.

Wabash (10-10, 3-3 NCAC West) trailed Denison (11-3, 6-0 NCAC West) 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Canton Terry cut the lead to two with an RBI double to bring home AJ Reid. The Little Giants added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Andrew Jumonville to score Austin Simmers and trim the lead to 6-5.

The Big Red opened the seventh inning with a leadoff baserunner, but reliever Eric Lakomek retired the next three batters to end the threat. The Little Giants got a one-out single from Reece Bauer, who moved to third on a single by Brayden Lentz. Cameron Martin hit a ground ball to second and beat out the throw to first on the attempted double play. Bauer crossed the plate with the tying run to send the game into extra innings.

Denison put runners on first and third in the eighth inning with only one out, but the Little Giant defense answered the call. A hard-hit ground ball to short turned into a tailor-made double play to bring the inning to an end.

Wabash put together its own threat in the bottom of the eighth. Reid picked up a one-out single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Terry drew an intentional walk with two outs. Sean Smith struck out swinging but beat the throw to first after a passed ball on the final pitch extended the inning. The Big Red got a fly ball to retire the side to move to the ninth.

Denison scored four runs in the top of the ninth on four hits. Wabash responded with RBI singles by Reid and Cole Vasillo to draw within two runs of the Big Red. With runners on first and second, Terry drew a walk to load the bases and put the tying run at second. Denison once again ended the threat with a fly out to right to claim the win.

Wabash scored a pair of runs in the second inning of game one on a two-RBI single from Bauer. The Big Red picked up 10 runs on 15 hits to earn the 10-2 victory and set up the road sweep heading into the weekend rematch between the two teams.

Terry finished with three hits in five at-bats with two doubles and an RBI. Reid and Vassilo also collected three hits apiece. Reid, Bauer, and Martin each recorded two RBI to lead the Little Giants in that category.

Lakomek took the loss in game two after pitching 4-2/3 innings of relief. He scattered four hits and three walks and gave up four earned runs. Kase Lawson started game one and fell to 3-3 on the season after pitching five innings and giving up eight runs on 12 hits and two walks.

Wabash and Denison will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader in Granville, Ohio on Saturday.
