Five members of the 2020-21 Wabash College swimming team received All-America honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches of America on Tuesday.
Connor Baker,
Jan Dziadek,
Caleb McCarty,
Chaz Rhodes, and
Wesley Slaughter were all honored by the organization.
Â
Due to the cancellation of their respective national championships, selection procedures were adjusted for the season. Swimming selections were made based on verified performances in competition submitted by their respective coaches.
Â
Baker, a freshman, received All-America Second Team honors with a season-best time of 16:24.68 in the 1650-yard freestyle during the End-Of-Season Dual Meet versus DePauw University. Senior
Jan Dziadek was recognized as an All-American in both the 100 butterfly and as part of the Little Giants' 200-yard medley relay team. Dziadek set a top time of 48.82 in the 100 fly in the three-day meet versus DePauw to help Wabash defeat the Tigers 231-120.
Â
Dziadek joined seniors Rhodes and Slaughter along with McCarty, a sophomore, to set the season-best time of 1:31.75 in the 200-yard medley relay in the final meet against DePauw. That effort earned all four competitors All-America honors from the CSCAA.
Â
"We are so excited to have these five exceptional men honored as All-Americans,"
Will Bernhardt, Wabash head swimming coach, said. "We set out at the beginning of the season looking to accomplish several things – among those being to have a relay qualify for the national championship meet and make All-American. While we weren't able to compete at NCAA championships this year due to COVID, we were able to bring home All-American honors.
Â
"I am grateful for this ending to a very crazy year. I want to recognize the entire team for their focus and effort throughout the season. Without everyone being committed to staying safe and staying in the water, I don't think these five athletes would have had this opportunity. It took a team effort and I am proud of everything these five men and our team accomplished this year. Progress is the name of the game and I am proud that we made strides to increase our All-American honorees from two last year to five this year. Also, having the second-highest number of selections among North Coast Athletic Conference teams is great to see. I am looking forward to what our team can accomplish in the future."
