Wabash College freshman Ozzy Jankowski has been named the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after breaking a 15-year-old school record, establishing two freshman records and collecting three individual event victories in meets against Rose-Hulman, Lewis University and Davenport University over the weekend.
Jankowski's record-setting performances rank among the fastest times in NCAA Division III this season. His time of 1:49.52 in the 200-yard butterfly ranks fourth nationally, while his freshman-record time of 49.06 in the 100 butterfly stands 10th among Division III swimmers.
Jankowski highlighted Saturday's home-opening double-dual meet at the Class of 1950 Natatorium by breaking the Wabash school record in the 200 butterfly with a second-place finish in 1:49.52. His performance surpassed David Birrer's previous record of 1:50.93, set in 2011, by 1.41 seconds. Jankowski finished just one-hundredth of a second behind Lewis University's Alessio Milano, who won the event in 1:49.51. The performance also established a Wabash freshman record.
Jankowski added another freshman record Saturday while capturing the Little Giants' lone individual event victory of the afternoon. He won the 100 butterfly in 49.06, finishing nearly half a second ahead of Lewis University's Davidson Vincent, who placed second in 49.53.
The freshman opened the weekend Friday with two individual victories in Wabash's narrow 156-144 dual-meet loss at Rose-Hulman. He captured the 200 butterfly in 1:53.51, finishing 3.65 seconds ahead of the runner-up, and won the 100 butterfly in 49.97, posting a 2.83-second margin of victory.
Jankowski also contributed to a pair of Wabash relay performances Friday. He swam the butterfly leg of the Little Giants' winning 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:36.86, and competed on the second-place 200 freestyle relay team that recorded a time of 1:28.33.
Competing on consecutive days, Jankowski lowered his 200 butterfly time by 3.99 seconds and improved his 100 butterfly performance by 0.91 seconds from Friday's meet at Rose-Hulman to Saturday's home competition.
