Running Game Grinds Up Terriers For 42-14 Win

Wabash ran for 301 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another four scores in the Little Giants' 42-14 road win at Hiram Saturday afternoon.

Wabash (2-0, 1-0 NCAC) opened its 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference schedule by outscoring Hiram (1-1, 0-1 NCAC) 35-0 in the second and third quarters combined.

Donovan Snyder handled the majority of the load for the Little Giants Saturday. The sophomore carried 21 times for 138 yards and two TDs. Snyder scored the first Wabash touchdown on a 10-yard run in the -first quarter to answer the Terriers' opening score, tying the game at 7-7. Ethan Haessig carried the ball 11 times for 64 yards in the final quarter for the Little Giants. Cade Campbell added six carries for 50 yards. Noah Bierma finished with 10 attempts for 48 yards for Wabash.

The 301-yard effort is the most rushing yards by a Wabash football team since the Little Giants ran for 426 yards against Allegheny in 2018.

Derek Allen caught the first of four touchdown passes from quarterback Liam Thompson. Allen hauled in a 27-yard pass for the first of three touchdowns in the second period and give the Little Giants the lead for good. Snyder added a seven-yard run for a score to push the Wabash lead to 21-7. Cooper Sullivan capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 13-yard TD reception just before halftime to put Wabash in front 28-7 at the break.

Thompson, who finished 18-of 25 for 244 with four TDs and one interception, connected with Zane Thomas on a nine-yard TD strike in the third period. Heisman Skeens closed out the scoring for Wabash with a three-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

The Wabash defense kept Hiram in check. The Terriers managed just 38 rushing yards and 197 yards of total offense in the game. Josh Myers led the Little Giants with nine tackles. Johnny Lamb recorded five tackles and two pass breakups. Wabash finished with three sacks and six tackles for losses of 30 yards.

Wabash plays its first home game in the new Little Giant Stadium next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Allegheny. Wabash will honor the football team members of the senior class before the start of the game. Haftime will feature the official stadium dedication ceremony.
