Wabash erased a 2-0 first-half deficit Wednesday night at Rose-Hulman, only to see the hosts score a golden goal in overtime to claim a 4-3 victory over the Little Giants.
Wabash (1-2) fell behind 2-0 after Rose (1-2) scored its first goal in the 17th minute before adding a second in the 26th minute.
Coledon Johnson put the Little Giants on the scoreboard in the 29th minute when he scored his third goal off the season off a pass from
Jerry Little II.Â
Wabash trailed by a goal at the end of the half before
Evan Miller evened the score at 2-2 with his first collegiate goal in the opening minute of the second period with
Bruno Zamora recording the assist. The Little Giants took their only lead of the match 12 minutes later when
Mitchell Keeling scored off a pass from
Adam Berg to give Wabash a 3-2 lead.
The advantage held until the final five minutes of regulation. Rose-Hulman's Takezo Kelly connected on the game-tying goal with 4:56 remaining in regular time to force the overtime session.Â
Rose scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into the first overtime when Caleb Urban found the back of the net to secure the victory.
"It was an entertaining game, to say the least," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "Our guys really stepped up and played good soccer. We dug deep when we went down 2-0. A lot of guys stepped in and played really good minutes.
Evan Miller,
Adam Berg, and
Jackson Grabill played extremely well for us tonight.Â
"Berg had a shot hit the post with three seconds left in regulation that would have given us the win. We almost had the game-winner in overtime when one of our shots was cleared off the line. The match really could have gone either way. We played good soccer. We've just got to find a way to secure the game and get the win."
Wabash fired 15 shots overall and put nine shots on goal. Rose finished with 17 shot attempts and eight shots on goal. Johnson tallied a team-high four shots on goal for Wabash. Keeling added two shots on goal for the Little Giants.
Michael Bertram recorded four saves in goal for Wabash.
The Little Giants continue their road trip with a pair of matches the weekend. Wabash will play at Principia on Friday evening at 7:30 CDT before concluding the weekend road trip with a 5 p.m. CDT match at Fontbonne University.Â
