Davidson Moves To Second On Scoring List In Win At Kenyon

Senior guard is also named to the Bevo Francis Top-100 Watch List

It was only fitting that Jack Davidson scored 17 of Wabash's first 21 points on Saturday at Kenyon. Wabash cruised to a 92-64 victory in the North Coast Athletic Conference contest on a day where most of the news revolved around the Little Giant senior guard.

Shortly before the tipoff of Saturday's game, Davidson was named to the Bevo Francis Award Top-100 Watch List. The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within small college basketball. Davidson entered Saturday's game at Kenyon ranked 12th among all Division III men's basketball players with a 23.6 points-per-game average. He also ranks seventh in free throw percentage (93.4), 10th in free throws made (71), 13th in three-point field goals made (46), and 18th in three-point field goals made per game (3.54).

Davidson finished Saturday's contest with 27 points to lead both teams in scoring, moving his career total to 1,981 points in 92 games. He passed Wabash legend Pete Metzelaars '82, who led the Little Giants to the 1982 Division III national title and ended his career with 1,976 and was at the time the program's all-time leading scorer. Davison is now poised to become only the second player in Wabash basketball history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. He is chasing all-time leading scorer Josh Estelle '00, who scored 2,065 points in 109 career games.

Davidson got off to a hot start for Wabash (11-3, 6-1 NCAC). He scored the opening basket of the game to put the Little Giants in front from the start with a 3-0 lead. Davison scored eight of the first 10 points, combined with a basket from Ahmoni Jones, to put Wabash in front 10-6.

Kenyon (2-13, 0-8 NCAC) matched the Little Giants early scoring and eventually moved in front 11-10 in the first five minutes of the game. Davidson took over once again by scoring the next five points to put Wabash back in front. The game remained tight with Kenyon eventually tying the score at 19-19 with 12:06 left in the first period before a 10-1 run put Wabash up by nine points. The Little Giants pushed the advantage to 11 points with six minutes left in the opening half and never allowed the host Lords to get any closer than 10 points before heading to the locker room with a 49-37 lead.

Wabash outscored Kenyon 43-27 in the second half to race to as large as a 34-point lead with 3:35 remaining in the game before settling for the 28-point victory.

The Little Giants shot 49.2 percent from the field, hitting 30-of-61 shots from the field. Wabash hit only 7-of-26 three-point attempts for 26.9 percent but went 25-of-30 from the free throw line to shoot 83.3 percent. The Little Giants held Kenyon to 37.1 percent shooting for the game and outrebounded the host Lords 46-34. Wabash also handed out 16 assists with Davidson and Tyler Watson finishing with four assists apiece. Davidson and Kellen Schreiber each grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Little Giants in that category.

Schreiber finished the game with 19 points, helping Wabash score 44 points in the paint. He came into the game ranked seventh in Division III in field goal shooting, hitting 70.5 percent of his attempts. Schreiber finished Saturday's game hitting 7-of-8 shot attempts and going 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Watson added 15 points for the Little Giants in the win.

Miles Versa paced Kenyon with 14 points. Alex Boyd finished with 12 points for the Lords.
