Earley Delivers Extra-Inning Walk Off Against Wheaton

A bases-load single by Kamden Earley drove in the winning run and completed a seven-run rally by Wabash in Monday's 7-6 victory over Wheaton College in 10 innings.

Earley, who finished the game with four hits and three RBI, slashed a single to left field to bring home Jackson Wannemuehler with the winning run. Wannemuehler pinch-ran for Evan Neukam after he reached base on an error to open the inning. Camden Scheidt drew a walk to move runners to first and second ahead of a sacrifice bunt by Austin Simmers to put the game-winning run at third. Michael Galanos walked to load the bases. Wheaton (1-5) got a strikeout for the second out of the inning before Earley delivered the game-winning blow for the one-run victory.

Wabash (4-1) trailed 6-0 through eight innings before starting its rally. Simmers opened the eighth inning with a double down the right-field line. A flyout moved him to third base before Reece Bauer drove him home with a groundout to short. Earley kept the rally going with a two-out single to center followed by a single off the bat of AJ Reid. Both baserunners moved up a base on a double steal. Liam Patton brought the pair home with a two-run single to left field.

The Little Giants added three more runs in the ninth inning when Scheidt started the frame with a walk. Galanos picked up a one-out single before Earley laced a triple down the right-field line to score both runners and cut the deficit to one run at 6-5. Reid tied the game one batter later with a single to short to tie the game and force the extra inning.

Earley's four hits led the Little Giants' 14-hit effort. Reid, Patton, and Galanos picked up two hits apiece. Patton and Scheidt both drove in two runs, while Bauer and Reid recorded one RBI apiece.

Gavin Patrick picked up his first win of the season by pitching 2-1/3 innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter. Derek Haslett pitched five innings and gave up just one run on three hits. He walked four batters with one strikeout. Tavic Simmons scattered six hits over 2-2/3 innings of work. He gave up two earned runs and two walks.

The victory was the second in three games in Tucson, Arizona, for Wabash during the school's spring break trip. The Little Giants opened play on Sunday with a doubleheader against 10th-ranked Aurora University. Wabash lost game one to the Spartans 9-8 in 10 innings after squandering a 5-1 lead through 4-1/2 innings. Patton and Bauer each drove in three runs. Patton blasted a three-run homer to left-center field in the third inning for his first long ball of the season. Reid drove in a pair of runs for Wabash in the loss.

Sam Phillips pitched the final 2-2/3 innings and allowed four hits and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts to take the loss on the mound. Dylan Scheid threw 4-1/3 innings and gave up eight hits and three earned runs with four walks and one strikeout. Grant Stratton pitched 2-2/3 innings of two-hit, two-run baseball. He walked one batter and struck out one.

Wabash secured the split with Aurora with a dominating 16-3 win that was halted after seven innings in game two. The Little Giants scored five runs in the second inning, two more in the third, and another run in the fourth. Wabash erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning to race away for the victory.

Earley drove in four runs for Wabash in the win. Felix Valero picked up two hits and three RBI. Reid, Simmers, and Neukam each added two RBI in the victory.

Jacob Bishop went the distance for Wabash on the mound, scattering seven hits and three runs. He struck out a career-best eight to earn the victory.

Wabash continues its spring break schedule on Tuesday with a game against Northland College at 1:30 p.m. MST.
