Seventh-Inning Runs Send Wabash To Losses At DePauw

Wabash held early leads in both games of its North Coast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader in Greencastle Wednesday afternoon. But a pair of seventh-inning rallies for the home team led to two one-run losses to DePauw. The Little Giants dropped game one by a score of 6-5 before losing game two 5-4.

Wabash (20-15, 4-12 NCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one when Reece Bauer raced home from second base on a base hit from Austin Simmer and a throwing error by the DePauw (19-15, 10-6 NCAC) right fielder. The Tigers took the lead with a three-run third inning.

The Little Giants bounced right back with a three-run inning of their own in the fourth. Camden Scheidt delivered a two-out single to center field to score Evan Neukam from second base. Michael Galanos drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Bauer, who smashed a double to left to score both runners.

Wabash held the 4-3 lead until the bottom of the seventh when DePauw got a three-run homer from Kyle Callahan to take a 6-4 lead.  The Little Giants mustered a run in the top of the eighth inning when Bauer hit a one-out double and scored three batters later on a single by Liam Patton. Wabash put a runner on third with two outs in the inning but could not bring the tying run home.

Wabash finished with 10 hits in game one led by Simmers, Patton, Neukam, and Bauer each collecting two hits apiece. Bauer drove in two runs and scored another two runs for the Little Giants.

Sam Phillips was touched for three runs on two hits and one walk in two innings of relief pitching to take his second loss of the season. Jacob Bishop threw six innings of three-hit baseball as the Little Giants' starter. He walked four and surrendered three hits while striking out six batters.

Wabash jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two off a two-run home run by Patton for his team-leading fifth of the year. The Little Giants added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Scheidt and a sacrifice fly by Neukam. DePauw answered with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. The Tigers took the lead in the seventh two-out triple to right-center followed by a single to center to take the 5-4 lead. Wabash was retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the contest.

The Little Giants were held to four hits. Simmers collected two hits while Scheidt and Patton each had one for Wabash.

AJ Reid took the loss on the mound after pitching two innings of relief. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out three. Tavic Simmons started for Wabash and pitched six innings. He scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts.

Wabash closes out its NCAC schedule on Saturday with a home doubleheader against 20th-ranked Denison University. Game one at Goodrich Ballpark begins at noon.
