Baseball Finishes Conference Schedule With Home Losses To Denison

Wabash played its final North Coast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader of the 2022 season on Saturday at home against the 20th-ranked Denison University Big Red. The Little Giants lost game one 9-3 before dropping game two 19-5 to the Big Red.
 
Wabash (20-17, 4-14 NCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI ground ball off the bat of Evan Neukam. Neukam added another RBI in the eighth inning with a single through the right side of the infield. Liam Patton drove in the final run of the first game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
 
The Little Giants held the early 1-0 lead on Neukam's first RBI until Denison (29-8, 16-2 NCAC) tied the game with a run in the top half of the fourth inning. The Big Red took a 2-1 lead in the seventh before scoring three runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth to earn the win.
 
Austin Simmers led the Wabash offense with three hits. Camden Scheidt, Kamden Earley, Alex Washlock, Patton, and Neukam each added one hit apiece.
 
Grant Stratton pitched 7-1/3 innings as the Little Giants' starter. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out two batters. Sam Phillips pitched 1-1/3 innings of relief and gave up four runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out two batters. Jacob Cox finished the game with a walk and a strikeout in a third of an inning of relief.
 
Wabash was limited to six hits in game two. The Little Giants fell behind 4-0 until a sacrifice fly from Neukam in the bottom of the fourth inning provided the first Wabash run. Earley added an RBI single to short in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scheidt scored a second run in the inning when he raced home on a passed ball.
 
Freshman Zach Bielecki drove in two runs in his first career at-bat in the eighth inning when he smashed a double to right-center field to bring Patton and Simmers home with the fourth and fifth runs of the game for Wabash.
 
Denison added two runs in the top half of the fifth inning and two more in the seventh before exploding for six runs in the eighth and five in the ninth to blow the game open.
 
Simmers, Scheidt, Patton, Earley, Bielecki, and Felix Valero each collected one hit in game two for the Little Giants.

Robbie Manuzzi took the loss on the mound for Wabash. He pitched 5-2/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits with a pair of walks. He struck out three batters. Gavin Patrick Michael Hoppel, Henry Taylor, and Leo Dilts each pitched in relief for the Little Giants in the game.
 
Wabash closes out the 2022 season at home on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Rose-Hulman. The Little Giants will honor the eight members of the senior class on the team prior to the first pitch.
