  • When: Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2 p.m.
  • Where: John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio

  • Wabash opens the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its 2022 football schedule Saturday afternoon at The College of Wooster.

  • The Little Giants own a 21-4 record against the Scots and are 17-4 versus Wooster since joining the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Little Giants area 10-2 in games played in Wooster, Ohio, but lost 24-10 in their last road contest on October 12, 2019. That loss snapped a seven-game road winning streak against Wooster dating back to a 23-7 loss to the Scots in 2003. Wooster won the last meeting between the two teams with a 44-41 victory at Wabash in 2021 despite the Little Giants putting up 670 yards of total offense, the second-highest single-game total in Wabash football history.

  • Saturday's game versus Wooster is first road game for the Little Giants in 2022. Wabash finished with a 4-1 road record last season with the only road loss coming at Ohio Wesleyan in overtime.

  • Wabash lost 24-10 to the Fighting Scots in 2018 at Wooster. The Scots came to Crawfordsville last year and claimed the 44-41 victory. Wabash has not lost three consecutive games to a North Coast Athletic Conference opponent since joining the league for the 2000 football season. The Little Giants have lost two consecutive NCAC games four times to Wittenberg (2000-2001, 2009-2010, 2013-2014, 2016-2017, twice to Wooster (2003-2004, 2019-2021), and once to Allegheny (2003-2004).

  • One week after lighting up the stats sheet with the third-highest total offensive yards output in Wabash football history, the Little Giants were limited to 257 yards of offense last Saturday in the 56-12 loss to number-two ranked North Central. The optimistic news for Wabash is that the 663 yards of offense generated against Hampden-Sydney trailed only the 711-yard record set against Denison in 2000 and the 670 yards of total offense produced in last year's 44-41 loss to Wooster at Little Giant Stadium.

  • Liam Thompson threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns - all to Cooper Sullivan in last year's game against Wooster. Donovan Snyder ran for 220 yards, and Cade Campbell added 104 rushing yards to the offensive totals. Wabash ran a total of 102 plays in the game for an average of 6.6 yards per play in the loss. Wooster generated 474 yards of total offense (66 rushing, 408 passing) on 70 plays for a 6.8 yards-per-play average.

  • Wabash still ranks among the top-40 Division III programs in the nation in total offense, averaging 460.0 yards per game. The Little Giants rank 39th nationally and are second in the conference behind Denison with a 474.0 yards per game average. Wabash ranks fourth in the conference in scoring average at 32.0 points a game, trailing conference leader Denison (55.5 ppg), Wooster (41.0 ppg), and DePauw (36.0 ppg).

The Scots enter Saturday's first home contest of the year against Wabash, averaging 409 yards of total offense, including a 522-yard effort at Hiram.

Two-time All-NCAC quarterback Mateo Renteria is in his fourth season as the Scots' starting quarterback. A First Team pick in 2019 and an Honorable Mention selection in 2021, Renteria threw for a school-record 3,237 yards last season. He earned the NCAC Offensive Football Athlete of the Week Award after becoming Wooster's all-time leading passer with a 396-yard game against Hiram. Renteria's favorite target is All-American tight end, Cole Hissong. The 2021 Second Team All-America selection and 2022 First Team Preseason All-America selection caught a team-high 13 passes for 219 yards and one TD in the first two games for Wooster.
