CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Wabash College erased a 14-point deficit with 19 unanswered points and forced four turnovers Saturday to defeat Hampden-Sydney College 29-20 in the fifth edition of The Gentlemen's Classic at Little Giant Stadium.
Wabash (1-0) remained unbeaten in the series against Hampden-Sydney (0-1), improving to 5-0 in The Gentlemen's Classic. The Little Giants honored 20 senior players and support staff members in a pregame ceremony before opening their 2026 season with the victory.
Hampden-Sydney jumped in front with a 19-yard touchdown pass with 10:01 remaining in the opening quarter. The Tigers extended the scoring drive with the help of running-into-the-kicker and offside penalties despite a 9-yard sack by Dakota Johnson and pass breakups from Liam Butler and William Harris.
Wabash's first possession reached midfield behind an 8-yard third-down run by Cole Dickerson before consecutive tackles for loss and a sack forced the Little Giants to punt. Tyler Church flipped the field with a 71-yard punt that pinned Hampden-Sydney at its own 11-yard line. The Wabash defense responded with a three-and-out, including a third-down pass breakup by Ayden Salpietra, but the Little Giants were unable to capitalize on the short field when a 46-yard field goal attempt missed.
The Tigers extended their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter before Wabash scored the final nine points of the half. Jackson Gilbert directed a 79-yard scoring drive highlighted by completions of 21 and 33 yards to Nick Witte before scoring on a 6-yard run with 10:05 remaining. Church added the extra point to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Wabash threatened again late in the half when Brand Campbell completed passes to TJ Williams, Luke Adams, Witte and Dickerson to move the Little Giants to the Hampden-Sydney 1-yard line. A fumble ended the scoring opportunity, but the Wabash defense responded moments later by forcing a safety with 1:36 left in the half to make it a 14-9 game. Will Freeman intercepted Tigers quarterback Connor Creech on the final play of the half for Wabash's first takeaway.
The Little Giants carried the momentum into the third quarter, driving 75 yards on 12 plays to take their first lead. Campbell converted third downs with runs of 15 and 9 yards and connected with Witte for 16 yards before finding Dickerson for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 7:30 remaining. Church's extra point put Wabash in front 16-14.
Tanner Crouch intercepted a Hampden-Sydney pass 36 seconds later, and Wabash turned the takeaway into points when Church connected on a 40-yard field goal for a 19-14 advantage. The Tigers answered with a 13-play, 79-yard scoring drive and regained the lead 20-19 on a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Tigers failed on the ensuing two-point conversion.
Wabash scored all 10 points in the fourth quarter while the defense and special teams repeatedly denied Hampden-Sydney scoring opportunities.
The Tigers broke a 54-yard run early in the fourth quarter to move deep into Wabash territory, but Crouch recovered a fourth-down fumble at the Little Giants' 35-yard line and returned it 25 yards. Church eventually gave Wabash the lead for good with a 45-yard field goal to make it 22-20.
The Little Giants produced another turnover on the ensuing kickoff when Luke Purichia forced a fumble and Keith Jackson recovered at the Hampden-Sydney 27-yard line. Dickerson carried the ball on all seven plays of the ensuing possession, converting two third downs before scoring on a 4-yard run with 1:53 remaining. Church's extra point extended the Wabash lead to 29-20.
Hampden-Sydney drove to the Wabash 14-yard line in the final minute, but a 31-yard field goal attempt missed with 28 seconds remaining. The Little Giants took a knee on the final play to secure the victory.
Wabash finished with 22 first downs and controlled the football for 35 minutes, 33 seconds. The Little Giants overcame the early 14-0 deficit by scoring 19 consecutive points from the second quarter into the third and forced four Hampden-Sydney turnovers along with the second-quarter safety.
Dickerson carried 21 times for 47 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 43 yards and another score. Witte led Wabash with 90 receiving yards on four catches.
Johnson paced the defense with eight tackles and two sacks. Crouch recorded an interception and recovered a fumble that he returned 25 yards. Freeman added an interception, while Purichia's forced fumble on kickoff coverage set up Wabash's final touchdown.
Campbell moved into ninth place on the Wabash career passing list during the victory. The senior quarterback finished the afternoon with 4,207 career passing yards, surpassing Dustin Huff's previous ninth-place total of 4,115 yards.
Wabash returns to Little Giant Stadium Saturday, Sept. 12, for a North Coast Athletic Conference game against Wittenberg University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
