Late Goal Sends Wabash Home With 2-1 Loss At Wooster

A goal off a penalty kick rebound sent the Wabash College soccer team home with a 2-1 loss to the College of Wooster Saturday afternoon in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Wabash (5-4-4, 1-2-1 NCAC) held a 1-0 lead on a goal from Jose Escalante until the host Fighting Scots (5-6-3, 2-2-1 NCAC) evened the score in the 42nd minute.

Escalante scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season off a pass from freshman Bryce Kinnaman in the 38th minute. The Scots responded with a goal from Luca Napora. His second goal of the season tied the score at 1-1 heading to halftime.

The two squads remained tied until the 86th minute. Wabash's Myles Bernat was called for a foul inside the penalty area to give the Scots an opportunity to take the lead. As Wooster's Max Wiley lined up to take the penalty kick, a yellow card was issued to the Scots' Moody Saadi, his second of the match. Saadi was disqualified with the second yellow becoming an accumulated red card, giving the Little Giants a man advantage over the final four minutes with the penalty kick still to come.

Wiley took the penalty, but a diving save from Wabash goalkeeper Fernando Ramos kept the score tied at 1-1. But Ramos was unable to corral the rebound. Wiley gathered a pass from Elliot Miller on the loose ball and knocked a shot into the goal for a 2-1 Wooster lead.

Wabash got two late shots with the man advantage, but a save by Wooster and a shot that missed high and right ended the Little Giants' opportunity to tie the match.

Wabash took 20 total shots in the contest, with five shots on goal. The Scots launched 21 shots, with seven ending up on frame. The Little Giants took eight corner kicks to six by Wooster. Wabash drew three offside calls compared to two for Wooster. Eight yellow cards were issued in the match.

The Little Giants return to action Wednesday with a 4 p.m. home contest against Ohio Wesleyan University.
