Little Giants Fall in Saturday Home Matches

Less than 24 hours after rallying for a five-set victory, the Wabash College volleyball team could not rekindle its comeback magic in a pair of home matches Saturday. The Little Giants lost to Trinity Christian College 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-13) and to Marian University of Wisconsin 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-16).

Wabash (6-9) matched the Trolls (8-5) point for point in the first six serves. Trinity Christian broke the 3-3 tie by going on a 5-0 run to take the lead for the final time in the first set before claiming the 25-15 victory.

Wabash remained even with the Trolls to a 9-9 tied and continued to stay within two points throughout much of the second set. TCC moved in front 18-14 before Wabash responded with a kill by Luke Davis, a block by Ricky Sessions, and another kill from Jackson Leeper to draw within a point at 18-17. The Trolls answered with a 7-1 run to take the second set 25-18.

The Little Giants battled TCC in the third set to two ties and two lead changes. Wabash scored three consecutive points after falling behind 2-0 to take the lead. The Trolls took over from there, taking the lead for good by jumping to a five-point lead at 12-7. TCC won the final set 25-13 for a 3-0 match victory.

Patrick Volk paced Wabash with six kills. Sessions added five kills. Will Beikes gave out 15 assists. Michael Enz scored a team-best five digs.

Wabash played another close series of sets against Marian University (8-4) in the nightcap. The Little Giants held an early and stayed with two points of the Sabres until a late run led to a 25-19 for Marian in the first set. Like the opening set, the second set featured five ties and two lead changes until the Sabres took the lead for good in the second set and won 25-22. Wabash fell behind 8-1 in the final set before losing 25-16 for a 3-0 match defeat at the hands of Marian.

Volk and Sessions both shared team-high honors for kills with nine, with Volk scoring a hitting percentage of .438 in the match. Beikes handed out 24 assists. Enz recorded eight digs for the Little Giants.

Wabash returns to action with a pair of matches in Chicago on Saturday, February 25, against Roosevelt College and Concordia University – Chicago.
