Little Giants Move To 2-0 with Win At Monmouth

Stonis Scores Seven Goals In Winning Effort

The Wabash College lacrosse team scored three first-period goals before outscoring Monmouth 9-4 in the second period on the way to a 20-12 victory in Monmouth, Illinois, Tuesday evening. The Little Giants improve to 2-0 on the season with the win.
 
Ethan Stonis tallied seven goals for Wabash to match his career-best seven-goal output against Mount St. Joseph in 2020. He also gave out two assists.
 
Jake Pippen started the scoring for Wabash with a goal just over a minute into the contest off a pass from Artie Rogers. Stonis added a pair of unassisted goals to put the Little Giants in front 3-0 through one period of play.
 
Stonis struck for two more goals after Monmouth (0-2) notched its first goal of the night. He added a third second-period goal five minutes in, then scored again with three minutes left on the first-half clock to put Wabash up 7-4. Quinn Fitzgerald followed with his first of five goals ahead of a Sam Santiago score for a 9-4 Little Giants lead. Fitzgerald and Taylor scored back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 11-4 before Fitzgerald found the back of the net once more with three seconds left in the half for a 12-4 lead.
 
Stonis scored again to start the third period, followed by another goal from Fitzgerald. The Scots managed to outscore Wabash 5-4 in the third period before the Little Giants finished the night with four goals in the final period for the 20-12 victory.
 
Fitzgerald scored five goals and gave out two assists. Pippen added three goals and two assists. Josh Taylor scored two goals, with Santiago, Evan Stonis, and Caulin Fitzgerald finishing with one goal apiece. Artie Rogers handed out a team-best three assists.
 
Wabash outshot Monmouth 66-27 and put 38 shots on goal compared to 17 for the host Scots.
 
Luka DiFilippo grabbed a game-high eight ground balls for Wabash. He finished with 17 faceoff wins in the game. Fitzgerald, DiFilippo, Bryce Poling, and Lucas Cunningham each tallied two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Braeden Cooper recorded five saves to earn his second victory of the season.
 
Wabash finished 21-of-25 in clearing attempts. The Little Giants scored three man-up goals in 11 opportunities while holding Monmouth to 0-of-4 in extra-man chances.
 
Wabash heads to Chicago Saturday to play Concordia University at 2 pm Central Time.
