Little Giants Finish 1-2 At Crossroads Baseball Classic

The Wabash College baseball team played in the Crossroads Classic at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, over the weekend. The Little Giants opened the three-game series on Saturday with a decisive 14-2 win over Albion College, but lost the nightcap 12-5 to Hope College. Wabash lost 6-2 to Heidelberg on Sunday in the series finale.
 
WABASH 14, ALBION 2
Wabash needed only eight innings to finish the job, but secured the 14-2 extra-innings victory over the Albion Britons Saturday.

Derek Haslett (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Wabash (4-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Robbie Manuzzi also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out three.

AJ Reid led the way offensively for the Little Giants, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double, a grand slam home run, a walk, and five RBI. Camden Scheidt furnished a standout performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Kamden Earley also contributed, going 3-for-4 for Wabash with a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Little Giants got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Earley drove in two runs for Wabash with a single, that scored Reid and Liam Patton.

The Britons then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Little Giants expanded their advantage in the second. Wabash scored twice on Scheidt's two-run homer, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Little Giants.

Wabash held Albion scoreless before building their lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning. The Little Giants scored two runs off of Albion pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Nick Logan.

AJ Reid recorded two extra base hits, but the Wabash Little Giants fell to the Hope Flying Dutchmen 12-5 Saturday.

Sophomore Grant Stratton (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Wabash (4-1). Sophomore Sam Benedict was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

Reid's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included two triples and two RBI. Junior Kamden Earley put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Evan Neukam also chipped in for the Little Giants, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 6-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the first inning. Wabash put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Reid.

The Little Giants kept the deficit at 6-2 before closing the gap further in the third. which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Flying Dutchmen. The Little Giants were unable to get any closer, as Hope added six runs to their tally on the way to a 12-5 final.

Camden Scheidt put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
