Little Giants Rally For Two Home Wins Over Illinois Wesleyan

Reid Delivers Eight RBI On Six Hits, Sam Phillips Earns Win and Save For Wabash

Wabash College third baseman AJ Reid collected six hits and eight RBI in two games to lead the Little Giants to a pair of wins in Sunday's doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan. The twin bill marked the 2023 home opener for Wabash.
 
Reid drove in five runs on three hits, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth in an 8-7 game-one win in ten innings for Wabash (13-6). The Little Giants got three runs on three hits by Reid in a 12-9 game-two victory over Illinois Wesleyan (4-10). Reid delivered a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a six-run inning for the Little Giants.
 
GAME 1 | Wabash 8, Illinois Wesleyan 7 (10 innings)

Wabash College tied game one at 7-7 in the eighth inning before securing an 8-7 walk-off victory in the 10th inning over the Illinois Wesleyan Titans Sunday.
 
The Little Giants were led by Reid, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Camden Scheidt also compiled a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two walks, and two RBI. Will Phillips also contributed for Wabash, scoring three runs on three walks.
 
Sam Phillips (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Wabash. The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Little Giants were trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Zach Bielecki came across to score the lone run of the inning for Wabash and get them on the board.

The Little Giants' deficit grew to 6-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into the Illinois Wesleyan (4-10) lead in the seventh inning. Wabash scored three runs, all coming on a three-run homer by Reid, scoring Will Phillips and Scheidt, which tightened the Titans' lead to 6-4.

Illinois Wesleyan built their lead to 7-4 before the Wabash offense got going again, tying the ballgame at seven in the eighth. The Little Giants recorded three runs in the frame, two coming across on a two-RBI double from Reid.
 
The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when Wabash walked it off on Scheidt's two-out RBI double.

Brayden Lentz also furnished a standout performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and two RBI. Evan Neukam also chipped in, going 2-for-5 for Wabash with a double and three RBI.
 
Braeden Bryant (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Wabash. The right-hander went one inning, giving up one run on three hits. Sam Phillips also pitched well, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none, and striking out one to earn his second save of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Little Giants put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Wabash scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Neukam.
 
The Titans then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Little Giants got back on the board in the third. Wabash brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Benjamin Henke's single, which evened the score at 4-4.
 
That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 Wabash lead in the fifth. The Little Giants scored once on an RBI single by Neukam.
 
Wabash lost the lead they built in the fifth but got back on the board in the seventh, trailing 9-5. The Little Giants scored six runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Reid, bringing the score to 11-9 in favor of Wabash.
 
The Little Giants kept Illinois Wesleyan without a run before building on their lead to 12-9 the following inning. Will Phillips came across to score Wabash's lone run for the inning. The score remained 12-9 for the rest of the game as the Little Giants held on for the win.
