The Wabash College volleyball team returned to Chicago to face the Concordia University - Chicago team that claimed a 3-2 win from the Little Giants last Saturday. Wabash won the opening set and claimed a fourth-set victory to once again to five sets against the Cougars, only to fall 3-2 again. The Little Giants lost to Cal Lutheran University in their opening match on Saturday 3-0.
Wabash (8-12) played a back-and-forth contest against CUC (7-7) in the day's second match. The opening set featured 15 ties and seven lead changes before the Little Giants took a 26-24 victory. The Cougars won the following two sets 25-17 and 25-20 before Wabash claimed a 25-21 victory to force the decisive fifth set for the second consecutive week.Â
Wabash won the opening point of the fifth set on a kill by
Patrick Volk. The Cougars scored the following three points before Wabash evened the score at 3-3. CUC jumped out to an 8-3 lead and held an 11-5 advantage before the Little Giant mounted a final rally. CUC got to match point at 14-8, but Wabash scored the next three points to cut the lead to 14-11. The Cougars put the match away on a kill by Elijah Mosher for the 15-11 win and 3-2 final.
Rickey Sessions and Volk each recorded 17 kills for Wabash.
Will Beikes gave out 42 assists. Volk also finished with 16 digs, while
Zachary Small added 15 digs for the Little Giants.
Wabash got off to a slow start against Cal Lutheran 15-6 in Saturday's opening match. The Kingsman scored seven service aces on the way to a 25-8 win in the opening set. The Little Giants gathered their composure and battled in the second set, taking an early 5-4 lead. The two teams played to eight ties, with the last coming at 10-10. Cal Lutheran took the lead for good, winning the second set 25-18.
The two squads traded points in the final set with ten ties and six lead changes. The Kingsman broke the 16-16 tie and scored the next three points on the way to a 25-21 win for the three-set sweep.
Sessions paced the Wabash offense with five kills and recorded ten digs against Cal Lutheran. Beiekes handed out 16 assists.Â
Wabash opened Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play on Friday, March 10, with a 7 p.m. match at Wittenberg, followed by a Saturday contest at Mount St. Joseph.
