Little Giants Outscore Witt 10-5 Over The Final 45 Minutes

The Wabash lacrosse team erased a 6-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 10-9 lead with six minutes left in Wednesday evening's home North Coast Athletic Conference game against Wittenberg. The visiting Tigers scored the final two goals of the match to send Little Giants to an 11-10 loss.

Wabash (7-6, 1-4 NCAC) answered the six-goal output by Wittenberg (5-7, 2-3 NCAC) with a goal by Ethan Stonis to open the second period. The senior scored two more goals in the second period while the defense limited Wittenberg to one goal, providing the Tigers a 7-3 halftime lead.

Quinn Fitzgerald scored his first of three goals on the afternoon in the opening two minutes of the second half to draw Wabash to within three goals of the Tigers. Wittenberg increased that lead to 8-4 with its only goal of the period before Fitzgerald, Jake Pippen, and Stonis each scored to bring the Little Giants to within a goal at 8-7 entering the final period.

The Tigers added a goal in the first two minutes of the fourth before a goal from Josh Taylor and a third goal by Fitzgerald evened the score at 9-9. Caulin Fitzgerald tallied the go-ahead goal for Wabash with 6:16 left to play for a 10-9 Little Giants lead.

Wittenberg found the game-tying goal with 3:50 remaining on the clock, then notched the game-winner with 2:11 left to play to escape Crawfordsville with the victory.

Wabash freshman goalkeeper Braeden Cooper matched his career high in saves, stopping 21 Wittenberg shots. The Little Giants put up 33 shots in the contest compared to 48 by the Tigers. Wabash picked up extra-man power play goals from Pippen and Stonis, finishing 2-3 in extra-man chances. Wittenberg scored on its only extra-man opportunity.
