Patton's Homer Sends Wabash To 14-13 Home Win Over Earlham

The Wabash College baseball team used an eight-run fifth inning to take a seven-run lead over Earlham College. The Little Giants needed a solo home run from Liam Patton in the bottom of the sixth to hold off the visiting Quakers in a 14-13 non-conference victory at Goodrich Ballpark.

Wabash (21-13) took a 5-4 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Patton, scoring AJ Reid from first after the junior third baseman drew a leadoff walk. The Little Giants sent 12 batters to the plate to score eight runs on seven hits. William McKinzie produced two of his three RBI in the inning with a two-run double to left-center field. Michael Galanos, Will Phillips, Brayden Lentz, Benjamin Henke, and Reid each drove in a run in the inning. Reid finished the game with three RBI.

Earlham (17-13) began chipping into the Wabash lead by scoring two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to trim the Little Giants' lead to 13-9. Patton delivered what proved to be the game-winning run with a solo blast to left center in the bottom of the sixth, ahead of a pair of two-run innings for the Quakers in the seventh and eighth innings.

McKinzie and Henke each delivered a team-best three hits in the game. Galanos and Patton each had two hits. Every Wabash player in the lineup had a hit in the contest.

Henry Birk pitched two innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Patton's two extra-base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, including a double, a home run, a walk, and two RBI. McKinzie finished with two doubles and three RBI, part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the first inning. Camden Scheidt came across to score the lone run of the inning for Wabash and get them on the board.
The Quakers then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the second inning, when the Little Giants responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Wabash scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Reid, which brought the score level at 4-4.
That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 Wabash lead in the fourth.

Wabash surrendered the lead they built in the fourth but got back on the scoreboard in the fifth, trailing 6-5. The Little Giants scored eight runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of McKinzie, bringing the Wabash advantage to 13-6.

Earlham got within 13-9 until the Little Giants scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 14-9. Wabash picked up a run on Patton's two-out solo home run.
