Wabash Celebrates Senior Day With 13-6 Win Over Oberlin

Wabash honored the six senior members of the 2023 baseball team Saturday afternoon before rallying for a 13-6 home victory over Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Goodrich Ballpark.
 
Wabash (22-13, 6-5 NCAC) paid tribute to seniors Jacob Bishop, Derek Haslett, Michael Hoppel, Brayden Lentz, Liam Patton, and Sam Phillips in the team's next-to-last home game of the 2023 season. The Little Giants trailed 6-0 to the visiting Yeomen (9-20, 2-9 NCAC) before scoring two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth to cut the Oberlin lead to one.
 
The Little Giants took the lead in the sixth by sending 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs to claim a 11-6 advantage. Wabash added two more runs in the eighth inning for the seven-run victory.
 
Benjamin Henke and Patton each racked up three RBIs in the Wabash victory.
 
Jackson Woehr (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Little Giants. The right-hander pitched 2-1/3 shutout innings without giving up a hit, did not allow a walk, and struck out one. Sam Phillips also pitched well, going three shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none, and striking out one to earn his fifth save of the season.
 
Henke went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double in addition to his three RBIs and Patton put together a 2-for-5 day, supplementing his three RBI performance for the Little Giants. William McKinzie finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Little Giants were trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Wabash scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Henke.
The Little Giants kept the Yeomen off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fifth, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Yeomen.
 
Wabash held the Yeomen off the board before rallying to grab an 11-6 lead in the sixth. The Little Giants' bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Patton.
 
Wabash held the Yeomen without a run before building on their lead in the eighth inning. The Little Giants scored twice, with one run coming across on Michael Galanos' 1-out single, bringing the score to 13-6 in favor of Wabash.
