Five Wabash College baseball team members earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors for their performances throughout the 2023 season.
AJ Reid,
Liam Patton,
Kamden Earley,
Camden Scheidt, and
Sam Phillips were named to the 2023 All-NCAC Baseball Team announced Thursday.
Â
Reid received First Team All-NCAC honors for the second time in his career. The junior earned a place on the all-conference team at third base this season after garnering a West Division all-conference selection as a shortstop in 2021. Reid led the Little Giants and ranked sixth in the NCAC with a .399 batting average while appearing in all 42 games this season. He collected four hits twice and had 20 games with at least two hits. Reid also led Wabash with ten home runs to tie for the fifth-most in a season by a Little Giant in program history. He broke the Wabash single-season records for runs scored with 53 and total bases with 121. Reid led the conference and ranked 29th in the nation while setting a Wabash single-season record by being hit by pitches 18 times in 2023. His 67 hits ranked second in Wabash history behind the 68-hit season of
Bryce Aldridge in 2018. He tied for third in program history with 50 runs batted in and finished fourth in slugging percentage at .720. Fittingly, his final at-bat of the season produced a three-run homer in the elimination game of the 2023 NCAC Baseball Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Â
Patton earned all-conference honors for the first time in his four-year career. A 2023 First Team All-NCAC selection as a catcher, the senior started in 37 games for Wabash and tied with Reid for the team lead with 50 RBI. Patton averaged 1.35 RBI per game, third-best among NCAC players and 43rd-best in Division III. He finished on a 17-game hitting streak for the longest by a Wabash player this season, reached base safely in 18 consecutive games, and produced at least two hits in 17 games. Patton launched six home runs and 11 doubles for a .528 slugging percentage. He ended his career ranked fourth in baserunners caught stealing with 34. Â
Â
Earley joined Reid and Patton as a First Team All-NCAC selection in the outfield. The junior started 41 games for Wabash in 2023 and hit .354 to finish fourth overall on the team. He tied for the Wabash single-season record by hitting seven triples, ranking second in the conference and 12th in the nation in three-base hits. Earley led the NCAC and ranked 29th among Division III players with seven sacrifice flies. He drove in 35 runs and collected 15 extra-base hits for a .521 slugging percentage. Earley reached base safely in 26 consecutive games for the longest streak by a Wabash player this season. He produced at least two hits in 17 games and had nine games with two or more RBI. Earley finished with a .468 on-base percentage and tied for the second-most walks in a season by a Wabash player with 32.
Â
Scheidt received Third Team All-NCAC honors as an outfielder for his first all-conference selection. The sophomore hit .312 for the season and ended the season on a 20-game streak for reaching base safely. He collected 54 hits and 32 walks, and two hit batsmen for a .421 on-base percentage as the Little Giants' leadoff batter. His 32 walks tied for second-most in a season by a Wabash player. He produced the third-most runs in a single season by a Little Giant with 50. Scheidt ended the season on a 20-game streak reaching base safely, tied for the second-longest by a Wabash player. He finished with 17 multi-hit games and drove two or more runs in seven contests.
Â
Phillips earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career with a Third Team All-NCAC selection. The senior right-hander pitched in 19 contests and finished with a 3-1 record with five saves as a reliever. His 19 appearances were the third-most in a single season by a Wabash player. His five saves tied for the Little Giants' third-highest total in a season. Phillips held opposing teams to a .267 batting average, limiting teams to 35 hits and 21 runs over 34-1/3 innings of work. He walked 18 and recorded 23 strikeouts.
In addition to the all-conference awards, senior first baseman
Brayden Lentz was named to the 2023 All-NCAC Baseball Tournament Team. Lentz led the Little Giants by hitting .500 for the tournament with four hits in eight at-bats. He drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the Little Giants' first game against Denison.Â
Â
Wabash finished the season with a 24-18 record, marking the second consecutive season with 20 or more victories. The Little Giants earned one of four berths to the 2023 NCAC Tournament with an 8-8 conference mark. Wabash set a new single-season record with 302 runs batted in. The Little Giants led the conference and ranked 18th in the nation with 18 sacrifice flies and finished 22nd in DIII with 20 triples. Wabash scored 340 runs to finish third in the NCAC and 68th among 386 Division III teams in 2023.
