The Wabash lacrosse team stretched its winning streak to six straight and matched the program's single-season record for wins with a 15-4 home victory over Augustana College of Illinois Tuesday afternoon at Fischer Field.
Â
Wabash (7-1) equaled the total of last year's 7-9 squad and improved to 4-0 at home to also set the program's record for home victories in a season.
Â
The Little Giants led from the outset, tallying five goals in the opening period.
Will Sorg started scoring for Wabash in the opening minute, the first of two goals for the game.
Artie Rogers added a goal with five minutes remaining in the first, followed by goals from
Zade Kalesperis and
Blake Stephens.
Christian Dybedock closed out the first-period scoring for Wabash with a goal off a pass from
Sam Santiago for a 5-0 Little Giants lead.
Â
The defenses took over in the second period, and neither team could score until
Quinn Fitzgerald created a turnover and scored the first of his four goals in the match with less than a minute remaining in the period. Augustana (2-5) drew a penalty on the goal, and Wabash capitalized with Fitzgerald tallying a man-up goal with 36 seconds left in the half to put the Little Giants in front 7-0 at the break.
Â
Wabash added four more goals in each of the third and fourth periods to finish with the 15-4 victory.
Â
Fitzgerald paced the offense with four goals and two assists. Sorg, Dybedock, Stephens, and Rogers each scored twice for Wabash.
Sam Santiago and
Josh Taylor also tallied goals for the Little Giants. Sorg added two assists, while Santiago and
Jackson Edwards finished with one assist apiece.
Â
Fitzgerald's six points against Augustana gave him 100 for his Wabash career. Rogers reached the 100-point total for his career earlier this season against Alma College.
Â
Wabash outshot Augustana 46-31 and went three for four on extra-man opportunities. Little Giant goalkeeper
Colin Krekeler recorded 11 saves to earn the victory in the net. Edwards scored six face-off wins, and
Luka DiFilippo picked up five wins at the dot.
Lucas Cunningham paced the defense with four caused turnovers.
Luca Flaim forced three turnovers and scooped up a team-best seven ground balls.
Â
Wabash opens North Coast Athletic Conference play this Saturday with a road contest at Kenyon College at 2 p.m.
